zod_: hi guys ... any suggestion about upgrading an old agp card (asus 9800xt) on an athlon xp ? i tried a sapphire hd2600xt (agp) worked fine on some old game like Oblivion but im asking myself how much the card would be 'bottlenecked' on a barton 2800 ...
starkmjolk: zod_: unfortunally games tend to be able to use more than the K7s these days. so your best upgrade path is probably new cpu/ram/motherboard
zod_: starkmjolk, yes i know but i think i should wait until christmas business is over and i also was thinking to keep this configuration as a second for old games ...(lan at home)
starkmjolk: zod_: I see. :) Well it's worth a shot but it will be quite dependant on what you run on it. Can't you just keep the 9800XT? I think it's a fairly capable GPU
zod_: yes i't a 'venerable' old boy but i'ts also a resolution problem ... i had to change my monitor (1280x1024) and i have now a resolution of 1680x1050 a @ that res. the R360 tend to 'swing the white flag' ... for the games, as i sad its more to have a playable second configuration for old one like ut2k, oblivion, nfsu ... i do not plan to run crysis on ti ;)
ndim: zod_: Don't change anything until after christmas, and then look how the driver situation has panned out.
zod_: ndim, driver situation ? i use omegas ... the 9800xt worked with some new catalyst (since 8.x if i'm right) but i could not manage to get the hd2600xt (it was a gift and i dont have it anymore) to work with it (catalyst) ... Do you think that after christmas they will still some agp card on the market ?
zod_: I 'gifted the hd2600xt card (my english is not the best ^^ ...)
starkmjolk: zod_: ah, you're on win32 :) this channel is really for the development of the radeonhd *nix driver :P
zod_: starkmjolk, _only for games_ ! i'm on ubuntu right know and use linux since SuSE 6 ;)
zod_: by the way thank's you guy's for work on the HD's !!!
starkmjolk: zod_: good :) as for your question, I think agp cards will be harder to come by over time. If you can find a cheap and nice upgrade it can't really hurt :)
starkmjolk: dinner now, bbl
zod_: well i could get eighter an his x2600xt (512 ddr2) or a sapphire hd3850 (512 ddr3) the HIS would be a little cheaper ... would be the difference be 'noticeable' on my K7 ?
zod_: *HIS's as also DDR3 ...
zod_: starkmjolk, bon apetit !
rindolf: Hi all.
rindolf: So how can I help with the RadeonHD effort?
starkmjolk: zod_: I dunno really and once again, will depend on the game. :) Try find some old reviews, or take the one you think you could afford. the 3850 should be quite a bit faster than the 2600
ndim: rindolf: Depends on your skill set, your resources, and the time you want to invest.
zod_: starkmjolk, ok, thanks for replying even if im not really in the right channel another question : i have a tv card (cx88) and i could not manage to get the 3d AND the tv at the same time (with both driver free and proprietary) does this issue still with the radeonhd driver ? In any case thanks again to all of you who spend time for the 'new' HD's !!!
rindolf: ndim: well, I can invest a lot of time because I'm not employed at the moment.
rindolf: ndim: and I know C and some Assembly.
rindolf: ndim: and many other languages.
rindolf: ndim: and I have an HD 2600 card.
starkmjolk: zod_: I'm not a developer and don't know really. but there is a note on the homepage about 2D and 3D acceleration not working on the same time.
ndim: In case you need TV out, TV out needs some TLC and testing, and egbert_ has not gotten around to do much in that respect.
ndim: starkmjolk: That is outdated, AFAICT.
starkmjolk: ndim: ah :) Then ignore me :P
ndim: Of course, on rindolf's HD2600 neither will be working ATM
zod_: starkmjolk, yes i know ... i saw some workaround for non hd's using vlc and xawtv (not tested yet) but i was wondering if the WA worked with the hd's ...
ndim: rindolf: other than that... better ask on the mailing list where the core devs are listening.
rindolf: ndim: ah.
ndim: They are on this channel, but they have not said anything for several days :)
zod_: the last question for me : could you devs make use of some old card like an 9800xt (agp) as spare part or something else ? Ok not that card here for the hd's, but maybe the team beyound the 'standart-free driver'. I would probably dont use my old card anymore ? Is this one too old or maybe she's could be of some use for devlppers ? (i do _not_ want to sale it ;)
zod_: ok .. im out ... thks for reply and keep up the good work ! cya ...
vikram: Ramblings of my new HD4870 -> http://vikramambrose.blogspot.com/
ivanz: Hello. I have a Radeon Mobility X1600 card and with gstreamer/Totem on fullscreen the video is pixelized. However with VLC it is not
ivanz: When I set the output plugin in gstreamer properties to X Window System (X11/Xv) it doesn't work (can not initialize error)
ivanz: How can I fix that?
TheCole: hello?
steve_: Hello. Is it ok to post problems in here?
yangman: steve_: ask away
steve_: just installed ubuntu and have went through the install to get my Radeon 2900 to work in ubuntu.
steve_: I installed radeonhd via git in unbuntu
steve_: altered my config file to load the driver. However, when I restart my enviornment, running glxinfo tells me that it is still using SGI for the server and the client
yangman: there is no DRI and 3D support for that family of cards yet
yangman: that's the expected behaviour
steve_: ahh, ok then. that makes sense.
steve_: Is ther any for the newer 48xx series yet?
yangman: no
yangman: only for r5xx family
yangman: so, X1xxx series
yangman: it's coming. just stalled somewhat
yangman: I'm sure it'll be all over the usual news sites when it does
steve_: ok, hehehe that was my next question
steve_: do you konw what the snag is?
yangman: some technical, mostly legal
yangman: the documents are still waiting to be cleared, but development has been going on for quite some time under NDA
steve_: do you know if it would work ok with the linux drivers from ATI?
yangman: no personal experience. just give it a try
steve_: thanks for the responses yangman. Will give it a try
yangman: anything not very recent should be supported by fglrx, but there are restrictions on the xorg server versions supported
yangman: xorg-server-1.5 isn't supported
steve_: so I have to have older versions of the server installed to get it working fully
Remosi: how painful is radeonhd to run, with two cards, with one in dualhead, on r600, on a day to day basis, assuming you don't care too much about 3D support?
Remosi: I'm happy to help out with hunting down bugs and fixing them, but I don't want most of my life spent implementing a driver for my video card :)
MostAwesomeDude: Painful?
MostAwesomeDude: You mean, like when you turn on the computer, it kicks you in the leg?
MostAwesomeDude: I think that's a Windows-only feature. :3
Remosi: well, the wiki suggests a lot of stuff doesn't work
Remosi: I'm happy to hunt the occasional bug, I don't want to have sit down and figure out graphics programming to implement textures to get X to boot with reasonable speed, or reasonable resolution or something like that
MostAwesomeDude: Well, let's see. You're looking at http://wiki.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature , right?
Remosi: yup
MostAwesomeDude: Modesetting and shadowfb work. That's enough to make most 2D things fast enough.
MostAwesomeDude: Especially if you've got a decent CPU.
Remosi: that suggests 3d is mostly useless, and only basic 2d accleration.
MostAwesomeDude: There is *no* acceleration. ShadowFB is server-side, doesn't use any card acceleration.
Remosi: I'm planning on going and splashing out on a 30" monitor, I don't want a repaint to be measureable by geological strata :)
airlied: I used a 30" with the radeon driver on r600 quite a lot
MostAwesomeDude: The one thing that is slow (and we expected this) is video.
airlied: in fact I'm using it right now.
MostAwesomeDude: Especially full-screen HD video.
airlied: but I don't watch movies..
