Nightwulf|work: hi all
patogen: Has the driver for R570 broken recently?
patogen: Sorry for not googling, but it's kinda hard without X
patogen: I did reboot into windows, after that I can't start X
Nightwulf|work: patogen: and if you switch off the machine and on again it works?
patogen: Nightwulf|work: No. It doesn't work after that, it's morning here and I've had the machine off for the full night
patogen: and it will not start X again
patogen: "Fatal server error: No screens found"
Nightwulf|work: patogen: any other message in Xorg.0.log?
Nightwulf|work: (EE)s?
patogen: No devices detected
patogen: and this message about "(WW) RADEONHD: No matching device section for instance BusID (PCI 6:0:0) found"
Nightwulf|work: did you perform a driver update just before?
patogen: Nightwulf|work: No. I didn't, that's the odd part. No part of X was updated before
patogen: And nothing of my xorg.conf was changed
Nightwulf|work: thats very strange
yangman: sounds like your PCI devies aren't being listed in the same order anymore
Nightwulf|work: perhaps a kernel update or changed BIOS settings?
yangman: it seems like you have the PCI ID explicitly set. try removing that, and letting the autodetect do its thing
patogen: yangman: Yes, I do have the PCI ID exp set
patogen: Nightwulf|work: Nothing of that
yangman: in any case, look at lspci -v
patogen: 06:00:00 VGA Compatible ...
patogen: 06:00.1 Display Controller (ATI) ... X1950 Pro
Nightwulf|work: patogen: then i would agree with yangman...delete the BusID setting in your xorg.conf and try again
patogen: I did that now, and now it's the same error message about BusID, however with PCI 6:0:1 instead of 6:0:0
yangman: pastebin your xorg.conf please
yangman: and Xorg.log
airlied: the 6:0:1 is ignoreable mostly
patogen: yangman: Sorry, I can't pastebin, only comp here at the moment. But http://patogen.endofinternet.net/radeon
patogen: should have those files
airlied: ouch DDC looks broken
yangman: well, there you go
patogen: airlied: The ouch part makes me not confident ;]
airlied: it seems it can't find a monitor..
patogen: Hmm, any idea on fixing it?
patogen: Yeah, that's so weird. Could it be that the "ports" have been changed and I should try the other port
patogen: ?
airlied: patogen: it might suddenly work on a different port.
airlied: patogen: other option is try -ati, until radeonhd people wake up and fix this regression
patogen: airlied: -ati? The problem with the prop driver is that my computer completly freezes with that
airlied: patogen: no not prop driver.
airlied: patogen: the radeon driver..
patogen: airlied: So what do I need to do for that? Change radeonhd to ati and modprobe ati?
airlied: change radeonhd to ati should be all if the distro ships the right version of ati.
patogen: airlied: OK. I will try that, will try a reboot before because I've changed port
patogen: brb
patogen: Hmm no, "ati" no driver found ...
airlied: patogen: radeon maybe.. what distro you running?
aneas: patogen, are you using archlinux?
Nightwulf|work: does use archlinux btw
aneas: (just asking because youre in #archlinux)
Nightwulf|work: :P
patogen: Yep Archlinux
aneas: `pacman -S xf86-video-ati` then
patogen: It's a great distro. However I wouldn't say the same about my experience with ATI.
Nightwulf|work: sometimes it's too much "bleeding edge"...some more testing here and there would be nice
Nightwulf|work: (archlinux I'm talking of :P)
patogen: Yep
patogen: Seems like the popularity of it exploded
patogen: Hmm. With ati X started fine
patogen: then screen got garbled
patogen: Will try the other port again and reboot ;]
patogen: Changed to ATI, garbled screen -> reboot changed to radeonhd
patogen: now it works fine
patogen: Weirdest thing yet
aneas: ^^
aneas: so ... never ever reboot or restart x again :)
patogen: True :D
patogen: Thank you all for all the help
patogen: Now if you could just make the rain stop pouring down I would be the happiest person alive ;]
patogen: Bit too much to ask I guess ;)
aneas: no problem, but i might take a while (its difficult)
aneas: s/i/it
patogen: the devs are attacking the prob?
Nightwulf|work: i would be happy if somebody could explain to me, why radeonhd tells me (Xorg.0.log), that DRI mode was forced to ON on my R680 but doesn't create a /dev/dri/card0 device node
aneas: patogen, file a bug report :D
patogen: aneas: It's been raining too long. Somebody should already have filed one ;]
aneas: ^^
telmich: good morning
telmich: the daily build report: same compile errors as yesterday ;-)
Nightwulf|work: good morning telmich and ack
telmich: hello Nightwulf|work :)-
Nightwulf|work: telmich: perhaps you're able to answer my question i asked some time ago :)
Nightwulf|work: -> [08:39]
motormouz: hi, i have the same problem as bug 16929, but i use the hdmi connection
motormouz: the screens stays black, but xrandr shows the correct resolution
motormouz: do i need to 'activtate' the screen somehow?
lupine_85: wonders how the R600 stuff is progressing
weissj: hi all, I have a question about the radeonhd driver. i recently switched to it from fglrx, and it's working great, esp with dual monitor and randr. problem is with firefox (2 and 3), while waiting for webserver's reply cpu goes to 100% (the X process). any ideas what might be causing that
motormouz: are you sure it's related to radeonhd
motormouz: i've seen similar behaviour yesterday on an box with a nvidia card
weissj: motormouz: yes, this definitely didn't happen until i changed my xorg.conf to use radeonhd.
weissj: i don't know for sure that the ultimate cause is radeonhd, but it's something in that code path
motormouz: and you've rebooted since changing to radeonhd?
weissj: yes
weissj: it's rather strange, i don't know what system calls firefox is making while 'waiting for reply' that causes X to spin 100% cpu
weissj: i suppose i could strace it, not that the result would mean anything to me
motormouz: i can't test it at the moment because i've got no picture at all :-/
weissj: hehe
motormouz: no strace would help i guess
weissj: well, i looked around and found that you have to explicitly disable composite and aiglx, which i hadn't done. so i did it and for the first few minutes that solved the problem. but then it came back
motormouz: how about smooth scrolling in firefox?
weissj: let me check
motormouz: anything related to gfx?
weissj: the smooth scrolling works ok. kind of choppy. i wouldn't continue to use it as-is, anyway
motormouz: do you use shadowfb?
weissj: um, i don't know, how can i tell
motormouz: it's an option you can set in xorg.conf
weissj: i don't think so, let me check
motormouz: xorg log should also tell if you're using it
motormouz: my setup defaults to shadowfb
weissj: no, no shadowfb
motormouz: you might try with: Option "AccelMethod" "ShadowFB"
motormouz: in the device section
weissj: motormouz: thanks - brb going to restart x
motormouz: there's also an option unverifiedfeatures or something like that you can disable
motormouz: you'd have to google that
weissj: ok
motormouz: k, good luck
weissj: motormouz: what about the DRI option
weissj: i don't have it but some other conf's i have seen do have it in there
motormouz: depends on your card id it's supported
weissj: do you think it would affect this problem i'm having
motormouz: i think you also have to enable it when compiling the driver
weissj: oh, i'm using the fedora rpm
weissj: not sure if they enabled it or not
motormouz: i guess having it off would be the safest
weissj: k
motormouz: what version?
weissj: fedora 8
motormouz: no, the rpm
weissj: oh
weissj: 1 sec
weissj: xorg-x11-drv-radeonhd-1.2.1-1.1.20080429git.fc8
weissj: looks a bit old
motormouz: no, looks recent but i compile from the git version directly
osiris__: hi. I'm preparing a list of people hanging on dri related channels. please post me your name, email, location and timezone or put it by yourself in http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/WhosWho thank you
weissj: motormouz: still there? tried shadowfb - firefox problem is fixed, but i have screen corruption on the laptop lcd (but not the external monitor)
weissj: i've seen this before i switched to shadowfb, but couldn't find a fix besides rebooting
motormouz: k, win some, lose some :)
weissj: no hints on the corruption eh
weissj: i don't think it's specifically because of shadowfb..
motormouz: maybe you can bribe the lcd? :P
weissj: hehe
weissj: maybe some magic xrandr command will fix it
weissj: tries
weissj: succeeds!
weissj: cheers
motormouz: cool
cire: what is the recommended driver for an x800 (r420) graphics adapter? (with or without direct rendering)
MostAwesomeDude: cire: radeon (xf86-video-ati)
MostAwesomeDude: All the goodies are supported.
cire: is this with or without direct rendering support?
MostAwesomeDude: Oh, and the channel is #radeon
MostAwesomeDude: Yes.
cire: thank you ;)
MostAwesomeDude: Sure.
telmich: hmm, is there any version of radeonhd available, that supports xv?
telmich: I wanted to play a dvd with mplayer and it is extremly slow
telmich: (unscaled)
yangman: telmich: recent git master, for r5xx only
telmich: yangman: recent master did not compile for me :-(
telmich: and I'm on x1400 / r5 :-)
frojnd: hello there
frojnd: I'm curious, I'm using this official package from repository of radeonhd, but something is broken so I'd like to update by hand also install git. Is x.org wiki's page enough simple to install all this ?
frojnd: I use opensuse and if someone with that system has successfully installed latest radeonhd drivers and git please let me know.
frojnd: noone ?
frojnd: :P
gentoofu: uses gentoo
gentoofu: >.>;
frojnd: I need a little help here
frojnd: if someone available
frojnd: I'm not very familiar with this radeonhd "thing": DRI, GIT any some other stuff... I have r5xx chipset, and all I have now is a radeonhd package
yangman: frojnd: the wiki link should be sufficient
frojnd: yangman: where do I start
frojnd: yangman: it says that first thing I need is a GIT
frojnd: but there is no instructions for starters..
yangman: if you simply want to try the radeonhd driver, you don't need most of the other stuff, except Xorg development headers. if you want 3D accel or Xv, that's a different matter
yangman: git is a tool. just install it using yum
yangman: or, whatever the package manager is
frojnd: git - Fast, scalable, distributed revision control system
Thargor: yep, that one
frojnd: is this the "git" we are talking about ?
frojnd: ok
frojnd: so now I have radeonhd and git
frojnd: the reason I'd like something more than just a package is because I can't watch properly movies... tehre are artifacts and flickering, I've posted my problem on phoronix forum but they've pointed me to x.org wiki page
frojnd: I need a little help just so I know where to start reading
yangman: if you're not familiar with compilation at all, I recommend trying the latest xf86-video-ati driver instead
yangman: you'll probably have to get it from the testing or experimental trees of Suse
yangman: actually, which radeon chip is this for?
frojnd: yangman: somehow suse has (I don't know how is this possible) radeonhd and raden under the same name of package: xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd
frojnd: raden=radeon
frojnd: yangman: I have radeon mobility x1400 which is r5xx
yangman: right
yangman: try xorg-x11-driver-video-ati-6.8.*
yangman: er, 6.9.0 rather
yangman: I *think* that's the package name
frojnd: nop
frojnd: It doesn't have
yangman: xorg-x11-driver-video-radeon ?
frojnd: I've asked on suse channel and they said that I just have to change name in xorg.conf uner Device section "radeonhd" into "radeon"
yangman: right, I remember. it's shipped inside xorg or somesuch
frojnd: something like that
yangman: but you want the latest version of it. I don't know what's installed now, but probably not new enough
frojnd: I think not, that is why I'd like to do something by myself (more hand work)
yangman: well, you have git installed now
yangman: so, install the appropriate development headers, and you can just follow the instructions on the wiki
frojnd: appropriate development headers
frojnd: is this mentioned on wiki ?
yangman: no
yangman: usually *-devel
yangman: so, xorg-server-devel, etc
yangman: I don't know what Suse's naming conventions are
frojnd: yangman: but it starts with xorg and ends with devel
frojnd: so xorg*devel
yangman: most likely
yangman: you'd also want to look here: http://wiki.x.org/wiki/radeonhd%3ADRI
frojnd: there are a few xorg*devel as xorg-fonts-devel, xorg libICE-devel
frojnd: should I isntall em all?
yangman: in any case, it's a lot of extra work to have things like Xv and 3D support if you're not already running some of the latest kernel and xorg packages
yangman: xorg-server-devel should be enough for minimal compile
yangman: I don't know how these things are broken up. devel packages is not a concern on gentoo
frojnd: hm
frojnd: there is only xorg-server
frojnd: xorg-x11-server
frojnd: xorg-server-extra
CynicalJawa: Hello all :)
CynicalJawa: Just want to see what the news was on hd3xxx cards is
CynicalJawa: I was havin problems a few
CynicalJawa: days ago, apparently there's some modesetting issues..?
CynicalJawa: Anyway, any news? I like to be in the know :D
CynicalJawa: libv?
