Nightwulf|work: hi all
telmich: hello
telmich: is there any progress towards reenabling the console when switching back to it?
telmich: I am using the X1400
MostAwesomeDude: telmich: Which driver?
MostAwesomeDude: radeon and radeonhd should both be fine.
dli: MostAwesomeDude, radeon gives blank console after suspend to ram
MostAwesomeDude: dli: Hmm. Can't replicate here, but that's because I don't come back from suspend.
airlied: wierd I suspend fine on my firegl.. not sure about console :)
MostAwesomeDude: airlied: I can almost guarantee you it's because Asus doesn't ship sane BIOS/ACPI. :3
MostAwesomeDude: Nothing to do with the video card.
telmich: MostAwesomeDude: radeonhd
telmich: module version = 1.2.1
MostAwesomeDude: telmich: Hmm. Last time I tested, it worked fine for me. I can test later.
telmich: MostAwesomeDude: if you need more information from me, just tell me
MostAwesomeDude: telmich: All I can do is test and confirm whether or not something's working; I'm not a radeonhd dev.
MostAwesomeDude: Sorry.
telmich: MostAwesomeDude: that's good.. just tell me the xorg and radeonhd version you are using, if it works
avis: can the radeonhd driver do compiz effects ?
Nightwulf|work: avis: depends on the gfx card you own
Nightwulf|work: avis: have a look at this matrix to learn wether yours can or not -> http://wiki.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature
avis: thank you Nightwulf|work. i get the impression that graphics quality isn't significantly better in workstation video cards than they are in desktop gaming cards. is that true ?
Nightwulf|work: avis: you think of firegl-cards?
avis: yes a v3350
avis: what are your thoughts ?
Nightwulf|work: haven't got any personal experience with those cards but i guess the won't be much difference since the same interfaces are used
avis: ok. thank you
Nightwulf|work: np
Sivart832z: Anyone lurking here willing to answer a question?
Sivart832z: Well - I'll throw it out there regardless. I've got a pair of HD2600 Pro cards, one with 2 DVI-connected monitors, and the other with just 1 connected - for a total of 3. Is the radeonhd driver to the point it can make all 3 work at the same time yet, or am I wasting my time trying to figure it out?
libv: Sivart832z: it should, yes
Sivart832z: Is it something that should be being automatically detected, or do I have to explicitly tell it there is a second device it needs to try using?
libv: you need to create two device sections
libv: in your xorg.conf
libv: and use BusIDs
Sivart832z: Hmm... I'll keep playing with it. Thanks.
Sivart832z: It's easy to find information on dual heads... but two video cards seems to be pretty rare still I guess.
Nightwulf|work: as well as two cards on one with xfire inbetween :P
telmich: hmm
telmich: just update to latest git radeonhd and now after xrandr --output VGA_1 --right-of PANEL the output on PANEL is disabled
telmich: (PANEL == tft of the notebook)
telmich: trying to enable it via xrandr --output PANEL --mode 1400x1050 fails with xrandr: Configure crtc 1 failed
telmich: I am using the driver from commit c2139d8c and X.Org X Server 1.4.0.90
Sivart832z: Is there a command that will just verify that the radeonhd driver is really being used?
mattst88: 'grep -i radeonhd /var/log/Xorg.0.log' should do the trick
Sivart832z: Anyone know of an example xorg.conf for a working multi-card setup?
telmich: hmm..ok, as soon as I change something on the PANEL, it gets black
telmich: Sivart832z: nothing special needed, just use xrandr
Sivart832z: Nothing I've done seems to be activating the second card/third screen, but my lack of knowing what I'm doing probably has something to do with it.
Sivart832z: The Xorg log is saying "(WW) RADEONHD: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:2:0:0) found" - that's the BusID of the second card, I believe...
Death_Sy1: Sivart832z: what's the second card?
Sivart832z: HD 2600 Pro - exact match with the first cart, which I believe is in PCI:1:0:0
Death_Sy1: humm
Sivart832z: Ok... How many screen sections should I have?
Sivart832z: Anyone know of a site with a working xorg.conf for two cards? I don't want to bug people with stupid questions, I just can't find a good example on how to set things up with multiple cards.
Sivart832z: Trying to call each device from the single screen didn't work, but creating a second screen, and calling it from the serverlayout section finally made it turn on. I just can't interact with it now.
telmich: anyone else here that has problems with the primary display being black?
rmh3093: airlied, ping
netoman: Hello!
netoman: Will the radeonhd driver support the R700 chips (HD 4XXX)?
libv: netoman: yes, when we get the hardware and the necessary info to bring it up
netoman: WooHoo! =) That's a very good news! So... I'm going for my ATI Radeon HD... ;-) LONG LIVE AMD AND ITS SPECS!
netoman: Lets suppose I want to contribute to this project... Where do I began? Testing?
LoneTech: libv: thanks yet again for your hard work. I recently dropped fglrx for radeonhd, due to the incessant interesting new bugs.
LoneTech: most recently fglrx decided to force virtual screen size to twice the real screen and draw any screen-sized opengl graphics on top of anything else, always.
m-c: netoman: The wiki is a good start
m-c: Do you use ubuntu, per chance?
netoman: m-c: Yes! I'm at the wiki right now! I will have to join the mailing lists.
netoman: I use openSUSE (10.3 right now, moving to 11.0).
m-c: I had a walkthrough of installing the development drivers for ubuntu, but I suspect there is even more support for the drivers in the openSUSE community. Check with them, too.
netoman: Also Slackware and planning my Linux From Scratch... I really don't like Ubuntu... Why?
netoman: I think building from git is the choice... Building from sources is the best!
netoman: Yes, the openSUSE has a great support.
netoman: I'm planning to buy a Radeon HD card... wich series would be better for testing the driver etc? I think not a very new one... HD 2XXX maybe?
netoman: Or should I go for an HD 3XXX?
agd5f: netoman: from the 3D perpective, they should all come up about the same time
netoman: So.. the HD 3XXX... ;-) Thanks.
m-c: As of right now, netoman , the R500 has better driver support than the R600
netoman: But... the R500 are too old... or am I wrong?
m-c: They are older, yes
rmh3093: r500 too old?
rmh3093: to old for what?
netoman: It's OK if I don't have the most exciting super-duper-3d features... The whole point of buying it is for helping as much as possible to the project, and learning a lot in the process.
m-c: I should emphasize ... the R500 chips have *much* better driver support
netoman: If I want 3D games, I have my new Intel GMA 950.
netoman: Are the R500 supported by the radeonhd driver?
m-c: yes
rmh3093: does anyone in here care about a hardlock I got trying to resume from suspend to ram
rmh3093: the display never came back on
rmh3093: it was completely black
rmh3093: would not respond to sysrq
yangman: hibernation issues are really hard to debug. I don't think anyone's worked on it specifically
yangman: it just seems to work for some
yangman: a good start is to make sure kernel messages are all logged properly, and see if anything unusual shows up
rmh3093: i could try that
yangman: depending on the tools you are using, any number of things can go wrong
rmh3093: i dont typically use hibernate, but i just reinstalled my system and must have forgot to disable the lid actions
yangman: it's still all very hackish without kernel modesettin
rmh3093: has anyone started on that yet for r500's?
yangman: I find suspend-to-ram problematic, but suspend-to-disk has never been an issue
rmh3093: yangman, i though it was the other way around
rmh3093: suspend to ram was ok, and suspend to disk was buggy
rmh3093: isnt that why there is tuxonice?
yangman: when you suspend to disk, the bios *has* to fully reinitialize the video card
yangman: works out better for video-related issues
rmh3093: oh u are just tlaking about the video card perspective
walder: hi
walder: I am missed something, or xv support was reported as commited into quick and dirty branch ?
agd5f: walder: yeah advanced accel and Xv for r5xx/rs690 are available on the quick_and_dirty_2d branch
walder: agd5f: cool, will try, 3D works somehow in master, but 2d is unbeliveble slow
Sivart832z: Is there a xrandx command or setting in xorg.conf to take a screen, spanning two physical monitors, and make it so full-screen windows are limited to one physical monitor?
yangman: Sivart832z: that's usually a window manager issue. it should Just Work with any modern wm
luiginoschese: hi
m-c: hiya luiginoschese
luiginoschese: hi
luiginoschese: got problem
rmh3093: airlied, ping
airlied: rmh3093: pong
rmh3093: airlied, your patches from drm-patches applied perfectly to -mm1
rmh3093: so r500 drm is working nice on -rc5-mm3 :D
Sivart832z: Hey guys - I'm using the latest radeonhd driver with a HD2600 Pro card and GNOME/metacity. I've created a virtual screen and set my two monitors to be side by side with xrandr, but any full-screen (maximized) windows and my panels all span both monitors. Any ideas on why/how to troubleshoot?
Sivart832z: No ideas at all?
LoneTech: Sivart832z: what you're asking for is xinerama support in your window manager, but I've no idea why it isn't already working.
yangman: Sivart832z: pastebin your xorg.conf please
Sivart832z: http://pastebin.com/d7e120f4d
yangman: just to be safe, can you delete configurations for "Default Screen2" and "Configured Video Device2" and references to them?
g-zu: you could also try with the original output of Xorg -configure
Sivart832z: I'll try it without as a test.
g-zu: should work with a recent enough X :D
Sivart832z: Once the second card/screen is removed, it works correctly.
yangman: well, there you go :)
Sivart832z: Any idea why... or how to make it work when the second card is being used?
yangman: do you actually have a second card?
Sivart832z: yes.
yangman: well, that's different, then
yangman: put the second device section back in, and see if it shows up in xrandr
yangman: I don't recall how well supported multiple cards is for radeonhd
Sivart832z: Well, it was working fine (other than being a seperate wm) - the only issue was the xinerama problem on the two screens connected to the first card
yangman: are you trying to run 2-card/3-monitor setup?
yangman: or 1-card/2-monitor?
Sivart832z: 2-card/3-monitor
yangman: okay
yangman: so, that's not supported at all, iirc
yangman: partially a weakenss in xrandr
yangman: using RightOf etc to configure it forces xinerama mode, which is more or less deprecated
yangman: triple monitor questions gets asked from time to time, but I don't think anyone's ever been successful
Sivart832z: The only big issue I've had is not being able to go "full-monitor" with windows when using both cards.
Sivart832z: As soon as the second card/screen (3rd monitor) is added back in, the problem returns the the first screen (2 monitors)
Sivart832z: Any idea when I'll be able to have xinerama thing working on the two monitors while keeping a second device, or do I have to wait until I can have both devices all under one screen?
