Chewi: are multiple Screen sections in your xorg.conf supposed to work?
Chewi: I saw an old IRC convo between airlied and a user who reported that it did work (with 4 screens on 2 cards!) but I'm having no such luck
Chewi: it just clones the screen, as if I hadn't done anything
Veza: Chewi: Shouldn't you use different BusID for each card?
Chewi: I only have 1 card with 2 outputs
Chewi: the log doesn't show anything interesting. it mentions Screen1 at the top (probably just the result of parsing the config) and doesn't mention it again after that.
Chewi: oh wait, I lie XD
Chewi: (EE) Screen 1 deleted because of no matching config section.
Chewi: I swear that wasn't there before
Veza: You don't need 2 Device or Screen sections for dual output from one card
Chewi: Veza: you do if you don't want it to act like a "big desktop"
Chewi: airlied said you do if you want it to have separate displays
Chewi: and that's how fglrx does it
Chewi: the "big desktop" thing doesn't work well in this case, the second screen is on the other side of the room
Chewi: I gather this is known as "zaphod mode"
Chewi: tried it with radeon instead of radeonhd and it works now
Eythan: hello, i have an issue with radeonhd-1.2.5, i have an old CRT screen and i am used to 1400x1050, with the radeonhd-1.2.4, it works perfectly, since my update, i can't go over 1024x768, i am running on gentoo with a ATi Radeon HD 3450, if anyone have an idea to help me ?
Veza: Eythan: pastebin your xorg.log ? Did you try xrandr already?
Eythan: with radeonhd-1.2.4 : http://rafb.net/p/n1JMqE17.html
Eythan: with radeonhd-1.2.5 : http://rafb.net/p/MLpouJ30.html
Eythan: and my xorg.conf : http://rafb.net/p/oXgbwH45.html
Eythan: and with 1.2.5, xrandr gives maximum resolution 1024x1024
Eythan: Veza> do you need anything else ?
Eythan: with 1.2.4, xrandr --> maximum 1400x1400
Veza: Eythan: Did you maybe upgrade kernel too, and forgot to upgrade drm module?
Eythan: i have the 220.127.116.11's drm module
Eythan: should i have the 2.6.30 rc4 ?
Veza: either .30rcX or separate source from drm git
mjt: drm should be either from the git tree or from .30rc
Eythan: ok, thx
Eythan: i will try with the latest git
Eythan: Veza> i have the same thing with the latest git of 2.6.30
Veza: Eythan: Do you still see "RHDDRIPreInit: Version check failed." in your xorg.log?
Eythan: Veza> no, i don't
Eythan: Veza> http://rafb.net/p/X8Ihk980.html
yangman: Eythan: default behaviour seems to have changed. you should really be using randr-based setup anyway: http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/HowToRandR12
Veza: there's no monitor found on the log.. Add "Virtual 1400 1050" in xorg.conf?
Eythan: Veza> done, same
Eythan: yangman> i tried, but nothing changed
yangman: Eythan: what did you try, exactly?
Eythan: xrand --auto
Eythan: xrandr --mode 1400x1050
Eythan: i added virtual in my xorg.conf
yangman: Eythan: your monitor doesn't use EDID, so xrandr will only set up a few of the more common modes. this doesn't include 1400x1050. you need to add a 1400x1050 mode manually
Eythan: yangman> how can i do this ?
Eythan: xrandr --newmode ?
yangman: Eythan: look at the URL I gave you
Eythan: when i add 1400x1050 mode, --> xrandr : cannot find mode "1400x1050"
yangman: Eythan: you need to use --newmode to create it for your monitor
b4283: i'm found an interesting fact about radeonhd driver
b4283: anyway, there's a text edit called madedit
b4283: the usual blinking cursor will disappear if i use radeonhd
b4283: i know this is true because catalyst made it come back
yangman: b4283: try and reproduce it using radeon. I don't see how this would be driver specific
b4283: no, you were right
b4283: radeon doesn't have it either
b4283: except for the mesg "unknown chip id 0x9610, can't guess.", the rest is pretty much the same
yangman: hard to say without knowing how it's implemented in madedit, but it's most likely fglrx doing something quirky
b4283: nice talking to you, good night
Mr_Chilly: hey all
Mr_Chilly: just upgraded X to 1.6...now when I use the radeonhd driver, I get a flash then my screen goes black. I can switch to another vt so I'm not crashing
Mr_Chilly: any ideas? I think I had this once before and had to add some stuff to my xorg.conf..but I can't find it, and can't remember where I saw it
Mr_Chilly: my xorg.0.log is in there if anyone can help
bridgman: Mr_Chilly, I believe 1.6 defaults to a plain back background; a number of people thought they were getting "black screen" but in fact everything was working
bridgman: might not apply to you but thought I should mention it ;)
Mr_Chilly: thanks..but that's not it...it's kickin my butt..I can't remember what I had to add to xorg.conf...I did see an unknown card detected line in the log..I have an x1600
bridgman: the unknown card message is normal; it really means "I don't recognize this card as one which needs special handling, so I will use defaults"
bridgman: what displays & connectors are you using ?
Mr_Chilly: I don't have those set in my xorg.conf I'm not concerned with the tv out..just my panel
bridgman: ok, panel is running at 1152x864, is that what you want ?
bridgman: btw it's not relevent to this problem but you don't seem to have DRI enabled, was that intentional ?
Mr_Chilly: no..that's not intentional
bridgman: Option "DRI"
bridgman: in the device section
bridgman: won't make a difference until you have an image though
bridgman: what is your panel res ?
Mr_Chilly: hmm..that's not right either...it should be 1600x1024
bridgman: there's no indication of a preferred mode in the log, so you might want to set preferred mode in conf
Mr_Chilly: doing that now..thanks
Mr_Chilly: ok...brb..see if that helps
cess_: hey, I've followed those instructions: http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/radeonhd:r6xx_r7xx_branch and got the radeonhd 1.2.5, still xvinfo shows no xv support and scrolling in xterm, browser is very slow
cess_: I couldnt find any hints in the /var/log/Xorg...
cess_: id appreciate any help :)
bridgman: can you pastebin dmesg output, or at least look through there ? no accel usually means drm didn't come up
agd5f: cess_: pastebin your xorg log. probably you didn't install the drm correctly
Zajec: cess_: show yout Xorg.0.lg
cess_: agd5f, Zajec http://rafb.net/p/lyMWV954.html
cess_: bridgman: overlooked your message
agd5f: cess_: do you have Option "DRI" "True" in your xorg config?
cess_: agd5f: yeah
agd5f: and Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
Zajec: (WW) RADEONHD(0): DRI support has been disabled at compile time ?
agd5f: cess_: looks like you compiled the driver without dri support
agd5f: you'll need to install the libdrm dev package for your distro
Zajec: cess_: maybe you need to install some devel packages for drm?
cess_: aww alright, Ill try that, thanks!
Mr_Chilly: it was Option "NoRandr" brought it right up
bridgman: ok, that's wierd ;)
Mr_Chilly: it is
cess_: alright, compiled with dri
Mr_Chilly: now I need to figure out why
cess_: restarting my xserver :)
cess_: alright, have it recompiled, but still no better results, my new Xorg.0.log:
cess_: and what exactly should I look for in the dmesg?
cess_: there is nothing with radeon in it
bridgman: all the messages related to drm
cess_: dmesg | grep drm returns nothing
bridgman: ok, that's not good ;)
Zajec: (else if (TYPE == 'Pie') new Pie;
cess_: alright, ill try and get the newest version and compile it again
Zajec: cess_: the same message
Zajec: (WW) RADEONHD(0): DRI support has been disabled at compile time
cess_: Zajec: :o really?
cess_: ./configure says 'checking for dri... yes'
Zajec: did you copy your compiled radeonhd_drv.so module to /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//radeonhd_drv.so?
Zajec: maybe "make install" puts that in wrong place?
cess_: Zajec: might be, i try it manually
cess_: is restarting the xserver enough or do I have to reboot?
mjt: for the drv.so yes it's enough, for radeon.ko - module reload or reboot is needed.
cess_: alright, now I get (EE) RADEONHD(0): RHDDRIVersionCheck: drmOpen("radeon", "pci:0000:01:00.0") failed.
cess_: (WW) RADEONHD(0): RHDDRIPreInit: Version check failed. Disabling DRI.
cess_: so I check for drm
cess_: /reinstall it
cess_: works! thanks, everybody!
cess_: finally being able to use mplayer again :)
cess_: strange, mplayer still says 'your system is too slow to play this' when scrolling videos
cess_: even though xvinfo looks good
cess_: okay, sound is the issue
cess_: recompiling with alsa enabled fixed the issue :)
cess_: thanks again for the help and gn8
