msan: I am running Debian/testing. I"ve got a FireGL V5200 card on my system. I had been using the Fglrx drivers and switched over to radeonhd a couple of days ago. I've been trying to get X11 to come up in 1152x864 as that is the highest resolution I prefer. Instead X11 starts up in 1600x1200 mode. I am NOT using GNOME/KDE/XFCE, just plain X11 and vtwm. I've tried the suggestion on the Wiki (section 9.3), but that didn't work either.
msan: Any ideas ? or pointers ?
thebentzone: you try making a stanza in xorg.conf to display 1152x864?
msan: Yes I've got a stanza in xorg.conf (Section Screen, Subsection Display) where I've got 1152x864 as the highest resolution I want.
msan: Do I need to put it somewhere else ?
thebentzone: lemme check
thebentzone: got the right driver?
msan: the driver I believe is correct, "radeonhd"
thebentzone: well, you could always disable gdm for a few, then start X -logverbose 8 and see what that says...
msan: X11 works only with VESA, fglrx, or radeonhd. These are the ones I've tried that I know work. I'm currently using radeonhd.
msan: I don't use GDM/KDM/XDM either. Using startx, though with radeonhd working just fine, I think I'll go back to XDM.
msan: Turns out that I can't exit my window manager if I'm using fglrx, as it freezes the entire system.
msan: If I do -logverbose 8 where will the output go to ?
msan: I"ll wait for eclipse to finish downloading and then I'll restart trying that and seeing what driver it picks up.
msan: thebentzone: I did the -logverbose 8 option to startx. Looking at the logfile it seems to be selecting 1600x1200 because it seems to be the first mode it finds. At least that is what it looks like to me.
msan: although my resolution has gone to 134x134 dpi and hence I can read the fonts better at least :)
