udovdh: kdekorte, you could boot a WinPE CD/DVD
udovdh: and run the update program for the card BIOS from that
udovdh: I still have to try that route
yojoe: What are the plans for powermanagement support in radeonhd? From my perspective this feature has higher priority than 3D support.
reppel: Hi, i own a x1250 (R690) and absolutely don't want to use binary drivers in my computer, so i've tried xf86-video-radeonhd and xf86-video-ati. radeonhd doesn't seem to support Xv, so i tried to build xf86-driver-ati, using: git version of drm-modules, git version of libdrm and git version of the driver itself, but with no luck (using Xv I have a strange diagonal tearing effect). Do you have suggestions?
Zhenech: reppel, are you using XAA oder EXA?
reppel: Zhenech: i've tried both
Zhenech: reppel, because with EXA i get quite good Xv performance on my X1400 (M54)
Zhenech: with XAA only a white screen :(
reppel: Zhenech: do you have quality problems?
reppel: No artifacts, tearing etc..?
Zhenech: not that I've seen
Zhenech: dont have the box here to test it one more time
reppel: Zhenech: you're using drm git + drm xf86-video-ati?
Zhenech: nope
Zhenech: only -ati git
Zhenech: the rest is default debian sid
reppel: Ok thanks
Zhenech: reppel, maybe agd5f can tell you more (or ask in #radeon :>)
reppel: agd5f: do you have more info?
reppel: Zhenech: ok
reppel: Zhenech: it works ok WITHOUT composite enabled
reppel: i mean
reppel: without a composite manager
fyn: hullo?
Zhenech: reppel, oh, yeah, that is deactivated here
Zhenech: hi fyn
fyn: fglrx borked on 2.6.25 and rather than deal with it i though "ooo now i can try radeonhd since it's not like i use 3d anyhow"
fyn: and since xvideo dies with it ... i was wondering what the typical way people use mplayer on a 3850 with radeon hd is? -vo x11 scaling up to 1920 is not happy
Zhenech: fyn, using xf86-video-ati *g*
fyn: is that the proprietary one that i was trying to avoid having to muck with the code emerge sends me in order to make compile on 2.6.25 or is there Yet Another ATI Driver?
Zhenech: fyn, that is the old opensource ati driver
Zhenech: fyn, originally for r100-300
fyn: does rv670 now?
Zhenech: but now it supports 500 and 600 too
fyn: not 670 then.
Zhenech: yea
Zhenech: at least it should
Zhenech: i should have written 5xx and 6xx :)
fyn: hmm... i will have to give that a go then.
Zhenech: # grep 670 /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Zhenech: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400, ATI RADEON E2400, ATI RV610, ATI RV670,
Zhenech: ATI Radeon HD3870, ATI Radeon HD3850, ATI RV670,
Zhenech: looks like supporting
fyn: while i'm here, may as well ask ... say somewhere that amd is paying novell to make radeonhd or something crazy like that?
fyn: er, saw somewhere
fyn: why would amd fund an additional linux driver when it already owns one?
Zhenech: dunno if amd pays novell
Zhenech: but novell pays the most developers of radeonhd
fyn: hmm.. if the radeon driver now does radeonhd cards, what's the distinguishing feature of radeonhd?
Zhenech: fyn, "be smarter and cleaner" by supporting a small range of cards
fyn: simpler IS better.
Zhenech: true
fyn: what sort of timeframe for acceleration to start to work enough for mplayer purposes ... like, month, quarter, year?
Zhenech: from what i've heard (i'm not a dev) they have some stuff for the 3d accel, and with 3d accel Xv will come
Zhenech: let it be a quarter for some basic support?
udovdh: at least
Zhenech: you won't be able to run quake4 at 100000fps
Zhenech: but basic 3d support may come
Zhenech: udovdh, wasnt it emmes or egbert who said they have some code in a private branch?
udovdh: yes. for a specific card
udovdh: also a WIP
udovdh: work in progress
udovdh: dunno the numbers of the card
udovdh: but also that 3d was not too different on a few cards they looked at
fyn: okie, thanks.... i'll keep radeonhd in portage and check now and then when gentoo spits new versions at me to see where its
fyn: at so i can help test all early-adopter-like.
fyn: yay for nifty folk making cleaner drivers for the card i bought, thanks all... ciao!
JKnife: the radeonhd driver is not reading my edids, i have a Visiontek Radeon HD 2400 PRO AGP with duel DVI-I ports and i am using a DVI-I to vga converter
JKnife: it is like this on both DragonFly BSD and several Linux distros
