johnf_: Help Help I need help. I want to run hd3870 openSUSE 10.3, ASUS p5e3 deluxe. I can't get sax2 to see the card - loads vesa instead. Try 8.12 ati drivers but nothing changes
tulcod: johnf_: then... manually modify xorg.conf?
johnf_: That sounds great do you have a conf file I can follow?
tulcod: johnf_: there are plenty of guides online on how to modify xorg.conf.
johnf_: Tulcod - yes and I have been trying but my mods stop startx from running
tulcod: johnf_: then solve that problem instead ;)
johnf_: How about a link that someone knows works
tulcod: johnf_: upload your working xorg.conf and tell me what you want changed
johnf_: I'm a newbie to IRC how do I upload.
tulcod: johnf_: rafb.net/paste & give us the link :)
johnf_: Sorry it took a while http://rafb.net/p/qLrxOi45.html
tulcod: johnf_: ehm, fglrx should be used
tulcod: johnf_: what's the output of glxgears|grep render
johnf_: error could not display (Null)
tulcod: ehm
tulcod: lol
tulcod: glxinfo|grep render
tulcod: sry
johnf_: unable to open display (null)
tulcod: johnf_: with xorg started
tulcod: like, not on a tty
johnf_: OK I understand have startx going
tulcod: johnf_: if you just want to try to use radeonhd (you currently should be using fglrx, according to that config file), change line 123 to: Driver "radeonhd"
tulcod: that *should* do it
johnf_: direct rendering:yes opengl render string ati radeon hd3870
tulcod: cool
tulcod: johnf_: that means fglrx works and accelerates 3d
johnf_: But it does not load
tulcod: what?
tulcod: what doesn't load?
johnf_: startx
tulcod: johnf_: but... you just executed glxinfo with X started right?
johnf_: yes
tulcod: then how does startx not load?
johnf_: that was a different xorg.conf - the only way to get it started is to use a different xorg.conf. The one without the ati
tulcod: hm, okay
tulcod: johnf_: so show me that one too
tulcod: johnf_: and... what's your goal? to use radeonhd?
johnf_: yes
tulcod: cause then, just use the working xorg.conf and do what I said earlier
tulcod: (the line 123 thing)
johnf_: OK - change line 123 to radeonhd
johnf_: I'll try it now
johnf_: Failed to load radenohd module does not exist
tulcod: johnf_: ehm, have you installed it?
ebo: "radenohd" or "radeonhd" ? :)
johnf_: I guess not - I thought that's what the ati install did. link to radeonhd? I'll google it.
tulcod: johnf_: ati's driver != radeonhd
johnf_: Still looking for the download - btw using fglrx trying to switch users causes the screen to go blank and it locks up.
johnf_: tulcod: found and installed radeonhd. Seems to work when I change user (no lockup). How can I tell if the 3d is working?
yangman: johnf_: radeonhd doesn't support 3d acceleration yet. please read the wiki linked in topic carefully
johnf_: OK thanks - for the info. Of course in my rush to get it working I did not read the wiki. Thanks for your help at least it working with out crashing
johnf_: bye and thanks all
sharkp: hi guys
fl: Hi people ! Does anyone knew when the 3D, compiz ... support will be available for the r500 series ? :D
fl: at the end of summer ? christmas ? next year ?
tulcod: fl: there were some rumors 3d support for r500 should be there next month
fl: cool :D
fl: and what about the powersave functions ??
fabiaN: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=radeonhd_12&num=1
fabiaN: is it true?
fabiaN: is radeonhd 1.2 released?
fabiaN: guys...
sirjaren: I can't wait until the *BSD port comes.
sirjaren: Sick of trying to grab the git. ;)
sirjaren: fabiaN: If Phoronix says it, it most likely is true. :D
oninoshiko: no, its all a lie, just to get your hopes up and dash them on the rocks of life, like so many crustations dropped open by the seagulls
sirjaren: o.O
fabiaN: :)
fabiaN: reboot... let`s try it...
oninoshiko: (sorry, couldnt resist
sirjaren: I suppose not. Hehe.
fabiaN: xm
skoder: can i get new 1.2? 'git pull' says 'Already up-to-date.'
libv: hrm... why couldn't this skoder guy have kept silent for a bit longer ;p
libv: tigerchen: we will have another release soon, and by then i hope to have at least fixed your issue, i had to give on this thing, as i wanted this one to block a release, but iirc, you're doing git most of the time anyway
tigerchen: libv: i am, i switched to git mesa/drm/xorg/whatever else yesterday (and to radeon *shame*
libv: :)
libv: is this working better?
tigerchen: well, it's sure faster
tigerchen: haven't got 3d really working yet
tigerchen: but switching between radeon and radeonhd is not such a big thing
tigerchen: once both are installed
libv: so it really is faster with exa?
libv: or even on xaa? which would be purely down to the cp being used there
tigerchen: exa
tigerchen: haven't tried xaa
libv: right, render accel, plus, exa travels 2 largely different paths whether the cp is used or not
tigerchen: ok, gutta go to bed, gf has to get up early tomorrow
Zhenech: n8i tigerchen
Primus: hey quick question maybe. I got a trihead setup, using radeonhd, its working, desktop on all three, and my mouse moves from one to the other correcty, but I cant drag windows from one to the other, if I enable xinerama the whole thing crashes
Primus: not sure what to do
szt: try it with two heads?
szt: which window manager?
Primus: gnome
szt: could try it with twm to figure out if its a gnome bug or a radeonhd bug. that's pretty lightweight
yangman: hmm... I'm getting significantly slower performance with EXA enabled :(
Primus: same thing happens with twm
szt: probably a radeonhd bug. Did you try with two heads instead of three?
Primus: same prob
Primus: even with one screen
yangman: the crashing, or the dragging?
Primus: crashing
Primus: with xinerama enabled, crash = always
Primus: with it disabled, it works, but of course no xinerama goodness
yangman: I can't say much about Xinerama. I don't enable it for my dual-monitor setup
yangman: don't seem to need to, either
Primus: so you just dont bother dragging windows from one screen to the other?
yangman: xffwm seems to handle the pseudo-xinerama fine
yangman: afaik, radr is supposed to deprecate xinerama
yangman: *randr
Primus: yeah, randr is loaded, but dosent seem to make a diff, not sure if I need to config it somehow
yangman: it should be automatic
yangman: which version of gnome/metacity?
Primus: 2.20.3
yangman: hm... it's recent enough
Primus: 2.20.2 for metacity
yangman: do windows cross screen boundaries at all?
yangman: or to they just snap to the edges and move no further?
Primus: snap to edges
Primus: window edge will dissapear, and wont show rest of window on the other screen
Primus: just like a single monitor
yangman: but you can actually drag windows partially out of hte current screen?
Primus: only the mouse can move accreoss em
Primus: yeah
yangman: hm...
Primus: they just dont appear on the other ones, the bit I dont see
yangman: which 2d acceleration method is enabled?
Primus: all my menubars etc are duplicated
Primus: no idea, how do I tell?
yangman: in your Xorg.log, look for either shadowfb, xaa, or exa
Primus: oh none of those
Primus: I assume its like load "xaa" etc
yangman: no, not your Xorg.con. you have to look in the log
Primus: I dont have any modules loaded
Primus: oh
yangman: something will always get enabled by default
yangman: unless you explicitly tell it not to
Primus: XAA
yangman: try using ShadowFB instead. may be an acceleration bug
yangman: add AccelMethod "ShadowFB" to the appropriate Device section
Primus: ok
Primus: so to all three device sections then eh
yangman: yeah
Primus: same identical deal
yangman: hm...
yangman: have you tried with just two cards?
Primus: like physically remove one?
Primus: or just dualhead
yangman: actually, what is the hardware setup?
Primus: two x1300, one x1950
Primus: each has their own lcd
yangman: and xorg version?
Primus: 1.3.0
yangman: I was going to suggest trying with a minimal xorg.conf and letting randr do its magic, but it may not work well with 1.3.0
yangman: I'm fresh out of ideas. I've never had to deal with multiple physical video devices before
Primus: bummer
Primus: yeah, it seems like a pain in the ass
Primus: this is the furthest I have ever gotten though
Primus: if xinerama didnt cause it to whipe out, I would be set I think
dmb: yangman: is it me or tigerchen's issue that you see?
yangman: dmb: the flickering?
dmb: yangman: yeh
dmb: yangman: in the vt
yangman: tigerchen's
yangman: no shifted image. just colours being screwy
dmb: oh
yangman: I just intalled the latest git and did a reboot. gonna see if it occurs again in the next few days
