OmG: shouldn't I have autogen.sh in my tarball?
OmG: it's xf86-video-radeonhd-1.1.0.tar.gz and the md5 is correct..
the-me: not in an offical release
OmG: it says that I should run ./autogen.sh in the readme
the-me: use configure
OmG: and then continue?
OmG: I cant make
OmG: I haven't barely needed to compile anything before
OmG: what do I do after ./configure? there is no makefile
Zkyez: OmG, ./configure
Zkyez: OmG, if the configure script does not give errors it will generate a makefile
Zkyez: OmG, what distro do you use?
OmG: ubuntu 7.10
OmG: nvm, I just found an error
OmG: is there any way to see if my installation was successful?
udovdh: yay!!
udovdh: another update! Quick! do a git pull!
udovdh: only minor, but still...
udovdh: for those to my east: happy new year
Zeelander: how late has it been updated for the last time?
Zeelander: udovdh?
udovdh: euhm...
udovdh: 31-12-2007 9:41 am
Zeelander: how late is it now? :P
udovdh: is that my local time? there is no TZ
udovdh: 1&;09 here
udovdh: 17:09 I mean
Zeelander: aah, so that's a while ago
udovdh: almost a day
Zeelander: because i just downloaded radeonhd, at 16:50
udovdh: a git clone you mean?
udovdh: then you have that update
Zeelander: so i don't have to update :)
Zeelander: yep :)
udovdh: you are Ok then
udovdh: waht card? and how does it work?
Zeelander: first time i try radeonhd
Zeelander: x1100
Zeelander: i have to restart x.org no
udovdh: ah, oh, I have an rv630 based hd2600pro
udovdh: I think so, yes
udovdh: init 3, init 5
udovdh: or ctrl-alt backspace
Zeelander: just waiting until my download finishes so i can restart xorg
udovdh: or what you like
udovdh: ok
Zeelander: or /etc/init.d/kdm restart :)
Zeelander: unfortunately, the ubuntu package didn work for me
udovdh: there is an rpm with the 1.1.0 release
udovdh: ndim made it
Zeelander: i tried it
udovdh: and?
Zeelander: but when i changed fglrx to radeonhd in xorg.conf, he couldn't find it
udovdh: huh?
udovdh: is the driver in adifferent location on your system?
Zeelander: dunno, i just installed it via adept
udovdh: it is in /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/radeonhd_drv.so here
Zeelander: same for me
Zeelander: but that's probably because i installed it via git
Zeelander: hmm, weird
Zeelander: this is the description of the radeonhd package in adept (package manager): Shisen-sho puzzle game for X11
Zeelander: doens't look like a driver :s
udovdh: hmm. that isn't the rpm ndim made...
udovdh: dunno about adept
Zeelander: which reposistory is ndim's package in?
Zeelander: hmm, it's probably just a messed up description
Zeelander: because the package says it does install the file radeonhd.so
Zeelander: radeonhd_drv.so
udovdh: typical
udovdh: I got mine here:
udovdh: http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=29303
Zeelander: ok
Zeelander: but i'm going to restart x now
Zeelander: brb
Zeelander: hmm, it says it can't find any screens
udovdh: I do not see x1100 in the list of supported cards in my Xorg.log. is that right?
Zeelander: yep
Zeelander: but i thought i just give it a try
Zeelander: and hope it works
udovdh: then you may need the radeon driver
udovdh: without hd
Zeelander: hmm
Zeelander: weirde
Zeelander: -e
udovdh: I don't know, I am not an expert
Zeelander: what's the difference?
udovdh: radeon is a driver that is aroudn abit longer (?)
udovdh: and is for slightly older cards
udovdh: that is what I gathered
Zeelander: hmm, i can't find a supported cards list of the radeon driver
udovdh: http://www.x.org/archive/X11R6.8.2/doc/radeon.4.html ?
udovdh: is that current enough?
Zeelander: hmm, it seems mine isn't supported by any of the 2 drivers
udovdh: http://linux.die.net/man/4/radeon ?
udovdh: maybe someone else here, with some radeon insight, can tell you what driver should work
udovdh: ndim?
udovdh: LoneTech?
udovdh: just hang around, someone will show up who knows.
udovdh: there is also a #radeon channel? you might try that one as well
Zeelander: i think i'll join #radeon to see if they know it
Zeelander: yes there is
udovdh: just ask there
udovdh: good luck!
Zeelander: thanks :)
ndim: Zeelander: if you could find out your "X1100" name in the "R300" "R500" etc. namespace...
Zeelander: hmm, dmesg says RS485 [Radeon Xpress 1100 IGP]
Zeelander: so i think i have to use the radeon driver
agd5f: Zeelander: yes
Zeelander: ah, great :)
Zeelander: is the radeon driver under heavy development ? (like the radeonhd driver)
ndim: I'd think the radeon driver is mature. Not much development needed as most things work :)
ndim: You'll get more qualified answers on radeon on #radeon, I guess :)
Zeelander: ok, thanks :)
sov: Hello
Temujin_: hello
sov: Happy new year
Temujin_: the same to you; i take it by your host that you're in Russia?
sov: Do you know how can I change powrstate on my notebook (videocadr x1270)?
sov: Yes. I live in Russia
Temujin_: I, personally, don't know too much about notebooks because I've never had one. What do you mean by "powerstate"?
Temujin_: cpu frequency scaling?
sov: When I use fglrx driver there is command aticonfig --set-powerstate=x which change freq of core/mem
sov: Not cpu but gpu
sov: test
Temujin_: hey, i was away from my keyboard
Temujin_: :)
Temujin_: this isn't a very busy/active channel, if you want help, sometimes you have to wait for it
Temujin_: i'm not a developer, but i do like troubleshooting issues, so i'lll look into your issue and seei fi there's a similar option in the radeonhd driver
ndim: I have not seen one.
ndim: IIRC there was some talk along the lines of "radeonhd does not activate all that acceleration stuff, so we are not THAT bad a power hog".
ndim: But I have not done comparison measurements of fglrx/fast fglrx/slow radeonhd yet on my X1400 laptop.
sov: Now the speed in not main think for me. I want to reduce the noice/temperature of my laptop.
Temujin_: sov, what kind of processor do you have in your laptop?
Temujin_: i think better gains could be made because of the available software to undervolt the CPU
ndim: Well, two CPU cores at 2GHz may let it draw 30W and with the two cores at 1GHz it may be 20W. But if you can get another 5 to 7W from the GPU, you're running at 13 to 15W instead of 20 and that will make your battery last another 50% longer.
Temujin_: yes, but what does he use to do gpu undervolting?
Temujin_: do you suggest that he stay with the fglrx driver?
ndim: I'm not suggesting anything.
ndim: Hmm. The power savings on fglrx are not very noticeable.
ndim: 18.0W vs 17.7W.
ndim: (aticonfig's set-powerstate)
ndim: So... I'd say... sod it :)
Temujin_: lol, he left anyway
musquetier: happy new year
