onegreg: Hi. I've recompiled my kernel (linux) and now I see radenhd is working a lot slower (for example when scrolling pages in opera or when switching between windows)
onegreg: i've forgot to compile-in kernel some option?
onegreg: yeah, i know... we have christmas, but can someone give a hint? :)
marcheu: "mtrr"
onegreg: marcheu: ty, mate!
onegreg: merry christmas to everyone!
udovdh: btw: about my PreferredMode questions yesterday:
udovdh: Section "Monitor"
udovdh: Identifier "Philips"
udovdh: Option "DPMS"
udovdh: Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024"
udovdh: EndSection
udovdh: This appears to work OK. (came up in 1280x1024 after init 3 and init 5)
udovdh: Xorg complains about too little Monitor info and mumbles about a default monitor etc but I guess DDC/EDID fill in this info.
udovdh: I.e.: works fine.
bl4val: i have the radeonhd drivers for my radeon HD 2400. How do i enable Desktop Acceleration?
ndim: bl4val: You don't. There is none.
bl4val: ndim: so i cant use compiz with the radeonhd drivers?
PinkFreud: bl4val: that is correct.
bl4val: Could anyone tell me what drivers i should use for Radeon HD 2400. if i want compiz to work?
PinkFreud: the radeonhd drivers just reached the 1.0 release at the end of November. They're at a point where they're usable for many people, but lacking quite a bit of functionality (partly because AMD hasn't finished releasing specs on the hw yet).
PinkFreud: bl4val: I don't know if fglrx works with the 2400. If so, that should provide the acceleration and 3d capability you need for compiz.
PinkFreud: otherwise, you'll have to wait.
bl4val: PinkFreud: ok, ill try to get them work then. i get error msg when i try to install/complie fglrx drivers
bl4val: PinkFreud: radeon HD 1.1.0 drivers are released. but i can't find em anywhere http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=948&num=1
marcheu: try from git
marcheu: you're sure to have the latest updates that way
PinkFreud: nods
PinkFreud: they're in some distributions
PinkFreud: looks like Debian has 'em
bl4val: i have sabayon
PinkFreud: they're in sid (unstable)
PinkFreud: not familiar with it.
bl4val: "merge ati-drivers" will get me the fglrx drivers?
bl4val: emerge*
PinkFreud: if you're running gentoo, or something based on it.
bl4val: yeah i do. thx
g0rt: hai
bl4val: where do i get the radeonhd 1.1.0 drivers?
ndim: Muhahaha.
ndim: is laughing maniacally.
ndim: Suddenly fglrx cannot find the panel's native resolution any more.
werdz: heh
dli: ndim, fglrx is a random bug generator
ndim: dli: Very much so indeed. It's just that I had not experienced problems with anything THAT basic with it yet.
ndim: Well, no FlightGear flying for me for a while then, I guess.
dli: ndim, I remember reading amd explaining fglrx releasing cycle, very dedicated, and efficient, even better than nvidia's
ndim: I have read that as well. Usually I run radeonhd (or Fedora's radeon), but sometimes I like to do a little 3D gaming and boot up fglrx. Mostly it works, but there are periods when it does not. Does not really matter, as I can then just play something non-3D.
ndim: Editor+Compiler make for a very exciting non-3D game.
dli: ndim, that's why I call it amd propaganda. just as amd did with their "true quad-core" barcelona
dli: ndim, perfectly true, but they just omit some major part of info, for fglrx, "fglrx doesn't work", for barcelona, "it's much slower than intel's combined dual-core"
ndim: I guess it
ndim: 's just history repeating.
ndim: 10 years ago, there were no accelerated video drivers either.
ndim: Then, with much PR, they opened the docs or something and accelerated drivers appeard.
ndim: Then the great 3D boom started and the the information was closed up again.
ndim: Now we're in a period of PR openening again...
