Nightwulf|work: hi all
starkmjolk: lo
bremner: Is there some subset of hardware where radeonhd is solid driving e.g. two lcd panels at 1600x1200 with good 2D performance? Or should I try to find a card supported by the radeon driver?
yangman: most of hte X1xxx family
bremner: yangman, thanks. It looks like a FireGL V3300 or V3400 would work. A bit pricey, but all of the consumer grade cards look like they are HD3xxxx based
yangman: 3D support followed by 2D accel for r6xx cards should be coming very soon, if you're willing to wait a while longer
bremner: good to know. so if I was optimistic I could order and HD3650 card and expect it to be solid pretty soon. Not that I would expect any sympathy if that didn't work out.
yangman: well, probably not solid soon, but at least start to see acceleration
bremner: hmm, its for my everyday work machine, so probably solid is more important.
bremner: and its work money, so the extra $100 is not a deal breaker
yangman: heh
Tanktalus: how is radeonhd's support for dual monitors? The HD3870 has two DVI ports, and I'm thinking about getting a second monitor ...
ndim: Buy me two monitors and a HD3870, and I'll tell you.
toggles_w: Tanktalus: works great
Tanktalus: toggles_w: ok, now just to convice the CFO... :-)
Tanktalus: good resolution on each?
toggles_w: Tanktalus: yeah, i have a 19 and a 20, they both run at their native res, there is a tiny bit of virtual screen below the 19 to make it to thesize of the 20 but you don't even notice it
TCW: hi folks... docs seem to lag behind (x.org wiki) and I am confused about recent xorg and rv6xx DRI support... in short words, does rv610 DRI work with recent (released, not git) xorg versions?
airlied: TCW: no.
MostAwesomeDude: TCW: No.
MostAwesomeDude: XD, hey airlied.
MostAwesomeDude: TCW: There's no r6xx DRI released yet.
TCW: MostAwesomeDude, why didn't you say a word on #compiz-fusion?! :-P
MostAwesomeDude: TCW: I just logged on. :3
MostAwesomeDude: So I missed your inquiry.
MostAwesomeDude: Additionally, I'm doing homework.
TCW: but in git it works?
MostAwesomeDude: No, AFAIK.
TCW: is there a rough timetable?
MostAwesomeDude: When it's ready. :3
yangman: TCW: no time table. there has never been a time table
Obscene_CNN: the only time table is it will be done after we get docs
Obscene_CNN: unless of course someone writes a function to manipulate the space time continuium for git
TCW: hehe
Obscene_CNN: I think they are working on that at CERN
TCW: so amd/ati has still not yet released all necessary docs for those chips?
MostAwesomeDude: Right.
TCW: Obscene_CNN, *lol*
TCW: damn
km: i have a question about multiple monitor support in radeonhd 1.2.1
yangman: km: ?
km: i'm here
km: i may have already answered it googling but here goes...
km: i'n thinking about buying a HD3650, my first ever ATI card, and I'm wondering if it can drive my two displays. I'm currently using a nvidia card doing twinview so I would want a setup like that where both monitors are grouped together into a larger virtual display.
yangman: not an issue. no 2D or 3D acceleration for that family right now, though
km: that was probably worded incorrectly. i know the hardware can drive the displays. i'm wondering if radeonhd 1.2.1 can handle it.
km: ok, good.
km: by 2d acceleration, does that mean that I wouldn'
km: tcrap
km: sorry
km: wouldn't be able to watch videos with radeonhd 1.2.1?
MostAwesomeDude: No 2D acceleration means no: Xv, EXA.
MostAwesomeDude: Video might be a bit slow fullscreen, and in general, things will be slow.
yangman: modern CPU is plenty fast to drive non-1080p video
MostAwesomeDude: yangman: True.
km: so i guess XV is essential to having decent looking video, especially on a 1900x1200 panel, right?
yangman: I've been watching 720p video on my 2-year old Thinkpad since before 1.2.1 :p
MostAwesomeDude: "Decent-looking"?
MostAwesomeDude: No, it'll look the same.
MostAwesomeDude: Xv is largely about CPU usage.
km: decent looking == not slideshow type framerates
Remosi: MostAwesomeDude, well, in theory with Xv you don't drop frames, without Xv you might end up using a lot of cpu and dropping a few frames.
MostAwesomeDude: (To be honest, radeon has bicubic filtering for Xv, but it's not really super-noticable. :3)
km: i have a Q6600 cpu in this box
km: decent looking also means not a lot of video tearing
MostAwesomeDude: Ah, now tearing, not really anything we can do about that.
km: hmm... is XV right around the corner for RV635 or does it depends on docs which no one has in their hands yet?
yangman: it's right around the corner. we just don't know where the corner is ;)
Remosi: it's needing documentation which (I believe) is due "any day now"
km: dropping some frames is fine so long as the average framerate isn't 10 fps or something really bad
km: i don't mind using up one of my Q6600 cores doing nothing but video scaling
yangman: anyways, it actually depends on your player a lot
yangman: and we're all just speculating here. no way to know for sure unless someone tries it
km: ah...is there a best player? i think i have all of them installed
km: hey does anyone know if the nv driver supports XV on the 8800gt? If not I can switch over to that and play some videos. Would that be a reasonable comparison?
yangman: bridgman: heya
yangman: km: I'm a mplayer fan myself
MostAwesomeDude: km: nv doesn't do much acceleration. nouveau does, though. Ask in #nouveau .
km: Well I was hoping nv didn't do acceleration. That way I could see what life would be like without acceleration in radeonhd.
MostAwesomeDude: km: There's EXA in nv, but it's not quite as fast without the DRM.
km: OK, thanks for the help guys. I'll probably buy the card and just keep my fingers crossed. I'm so f*** sick of closed source drivers. I've been dying to switch to ATI ever since they announced they were releasing docs.
yangman: bridgman: I gotta ask: what's going on with the docs?
MostAwesomeDude: yangman: We're talkin' bout it in #radeon. I guess they're currently in IP review (read: Legal)
