nolon2020: Hi # according to the wiki Dual-Link DVI is not working is this statement still correct for version 1.1. and the latest git ?
nolon2020: and if that is correct I should still be able to get some output with single link and a resolution of lets say 1280x800 on a 30" Display, I only get a black output however
nolon2020: The hw is a R600 HD3850
Temujin_: hi nolon2020 : 38x0 support was just added recently, so yes, try pulling the latest git
nolon2020: already tried no luck
Temujin_: oh :\
egbert: nolon2020: yes, you should. so please post your log to the ml.
nolon2020: and I didn't see any error in the Xorg.0.log either :-(
nolon2020: ok will do
egbert: nolon2020: right. if your output is black you probably have problems with some electrical values for the tmds output.
nolon2020: can I up the debug output level to get some meaningful info
soc: hi
egbert: maybe let's look at a normal log first. also you should set the option norandr in the config file. the resulting logfile is more readable (for me).
soc: happy new year btw :-)
nolon2020: ok will send it from tturner at novell dot com
soc: nolon2020: is that the turner who also wrote the freetype patches for improved font rendering? (just curious :-)
nolon2020: no sorry I'm no dev
egbert: soc: happy new year :)
airlied: nolon2020: try radeon driver... it should do dual-link fine ..
nolon2020: I need to reboot so brb
soc: hi egbert :-)
soc: the docs released this thime were 2d only, weren't they?
egbert: soc: yes. mode setting mostly.
soc: ah ok
soc: can i expect any problems when conncting my laptop with beamer and the like?
egbert: soc: well, you should test it before you plan to give a talk. basically randr should work. but randr 1.2 itself isn't completely free of problems.
soc: ah ok thanks!
soc: what are the plans of the devs?
soc: mode setting did work almost perfectly before the docs came, so did they even help?
soc: or just a nice to have?
glisse: soc: they did have this docs since weeks/month...
soc: ah ok :-)
soc: this could explain it ...
glisse: my bet are that their plan is to have beer ;)
soc: lol
soc: so do they already have the next docs under nda?
soc: ok, *no comment* :-)
Ryszu: It's likely, for at least some of the bits that were supposed to be available along with the last doc drop anyway
libvde: soc: we had beer to celebrate 1.1.0, but that is it
soc: ok :-)
libvde: soc: the next docs would be rv670, which contains the same stuff for rv670
libvde: soc: we have not been given further documentation, and the rv670 board is somewhere in the post atm
libvde: as it was sent a day or so before the christmas break
soc: ah ok
soc: libvde: so basically the new nda-free docs didn't contain anything new?
libvde: soc: depends on what you define as new
libvde: the lvtma block had some changes
libvde: for which we, before we had the m88 docs, had no information at all
soc: ah ok
libvde: you might remember that RS6xx and R6xx LVTMA support was rather late
soc: yes,yes
soc: what will be the next big thing?
libvde: not sure yet, we need to talk this through with AMD
libvde: soc: we had a lot of things outlined for 2008 in november, now we need to go and find out what is possible in this quarter and what really has precedence
soc: ah ok
soc: what are these things?
soc: 3d, 2d-accel, video accel, tv-out?
Ryszu: Presumably the next step is 2D acceleration
soc: ah ok
libvde: Ryszu: yeah, this is what i would be gunning for personally
soc: but won't that mean 3d? at least with r600?
libvde: Ryszu: it is the next logical step
Ryszu: R600 doesn't have a 2D engine as such, but it doesn't mean you get free 3D in a driver either
libvde: soc: there is supposed to be 2D emulation, if the 3D core is initialised correctly
soc: ah ok
libvde: soc: but yeah, logically, 2D acceleration is on the map next
soc: so the 3d chip can be switched into a mode where it works like a 2d chip from ealier generations?
libvde: soc: i heard, i think back in august or something, that this was emulated in microcode
libvde: but how it really looks, i do not know yet
soc: ah ok
soc: i wonder when ogl3 will be fianlly released ... it was promised for last year already ...
Ryszu: I think it's likely it's programmed in much the same way at the 2D engine in previous chips, as far as the driver's concerned?
libvde: and apart from the radeon drivers exa and xaa code, we have nothing that explains the 2D for earlier radeon hardware either. as far as i know, we still do not have access to ATI docs from back when they handed out NDAs in the R200 days
soc: ah ok
soc: afai understood ogl3 will be an important part for gallium, but how can they start if the docs are still mia?
Ryszu: There are docs, but not outside of Khronos
Ryszu: NVIDIA have started their driver, for example
glisse: soc: tungsten likely have access to draft
soc: mhhh, but that won't help the free developers ...
soc: ah ok
soc: i wonder why the specification-making process isn't more transparent ...
Ryszu: If you ask the Khronos chair, he'll usually tell you what you want to know
libvde: soc: it's a valve one can turn... and then one can control the flow to fit ones political purposes.
wltjr: greetings, wondering if I should give radeonhd a go, fglrx is a piece atm with my new low $ hd 2600 pro, anyone else with that card or similar? good/bad/ugly?
libvde: good, when you do not need anything beyond basic modesetting
wltjr: not looking to play games or etc, just decent performance on dual desktops, atm with fglrx the second monitor is very laggy, and restarts the machine on log out :(
libvde: well, try radeonhd, and be surprised in that it is actually useful :)
wltjr: libvde: yeah I will look into the xorg.conf option for radeonhd, I doubt I can just replace fglrx with it, but might try being lazy :), was hoping to have drm/dri, seemed like there wasn't 2d or 3d support atm or something per what I saw on wiki or etc
wltjr: libvde: do you know what No Dual Link DVI support so far? does that mean anything to me on dual desktops?
libvde: wltjr: unless you have like 30" panels, this will not affect you :)
wltjr: nah just 2 :) but dual dvi card
libvde: both dvi connectors are supported
hd3850: hello
musquetier: hi
musquetier: I bet I know which ati card do u have ;)
hd3850: trying to enable compiz. No luck till now
hd3850: :-)
hd3850: running gutsy
hd3850: tried with Catalyst 7.12 but it does not support my resolution (1680x1050))
hd3850: I currently use radeonhd 1.1.0
hd3850: It does not support 2D-3D accell.
hd3850: do you know the roadmap of radeonhd?
musquetier: not a me, probably someone else here
musquetier: idle around and hope to get an answer :)
hd3850: thanks
wltjr: libvde: doesn't seem to support dual desktops, even when I enabled xinerama no go, when I dropped second monitor for server layout, got cloned displays, not really what I am looking for :)
wltjr: libvde: similar to http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4979 still reading through it, just tried the single suggestion and that worked
marcheu: you don't use xinerama these days, but instead randr 1.2 : http://www.intellinuxgraphics.org/dualhead.html
wltjr: my bad, I wasn't using xinerama before, just had it enable to mess with, prefer to separate desktops
wltjr: s/to/two
