spstarr_desk: is quite upset right noq
airlied_: spstarr_work: should be an AGP kernel to test in koji tomorrow.
airlied_: try booting it normally.. if that doesn't work, try passing radeon.agpmode= values on the kernel command line
airlied_: it takes 1,2,4,8 or -1 is disable AGP and use PCI
logari81: hi, have anyone a tip for this one http://www.pastebin.ca/1227686, on a X1600 pro using the radeon driver offcourse
logari81: could it be EXA/XAA related?
airlied_: logari81: turn on EXA.
logari81: thanks
libvde: hrm, exa versus xaa shouldn't make much of a difference if enough offscreen memory is available
libvde: any log should verbosely explain whether it was because the pixmap was in or out of the FB
marcheu: libvde: exa is well maintained, as opposed to xaa... that could very well justify it
logari81: EXA works fine
noob_: help me!! xD
x1550-: hi i have x1550 what is better for this card radeonhd or radeon /?
xnguard: x1550-: Either. Neither. Depends on what you're doing.
x1550-: xnquard i want try play some games
xnguard: x1550-: If you want to play modern games as fast as possible, you want the closed-source fglrx drivers. Support's over in #ati.
xnguard: x1550-: If speed's not quite as critical, or you just wanted to play ArmagetronAD or something, radeon and radeonhd will probably work about equally well.
adamk: But, in terms of 3D performance, both radeon and radeonhd use the same 3D driver, so you're going to see the same results.
spstarr_work: airlied_: thanks! I will be testing this today.
mmp: hello; just for my info -- are there any news about DRI and RS600 chipset support?
mmp: or any code to test :)
orkid: mmp: u already looked at topic?
mmp: orkid: RS600 is something different from R600 video chip
mmp: RS600 is ATi chipset (similar to RS690), which has ATI graphics core
mmp: radeon xpress 1250 one
orkid: oh.. so its not based on r600?
orkid: the gfx core.
mmp: no, (unfortunately) on much older core
orkid: then maybe radeonhd supports it?
mmp: well, both radeon and radeonhd do...
mmp: but there is so far no DRI support
orkid: oh , not even in radeonhd? too bad
mmp: well, it can work without DRI...
yangman: mmp: there should be DRI support
mmp: but it isn't even able of XVideo acceleration
yangman: if you've set up DRI properly, then it's supposed to work
mmp: yangman: __osiris was working on the support (I was more-or-less just guinea pig:), but I'm afraid there is no support yet...
mmp: it's all integrated in chipset, and iirc there were problems with memory controller
yangman: ah. special case, then? I'm just covering the basics
mmp: yes, unfortunately :-(
logari81: Today I had an issue with a X1600 card crashing vlc,totem... with "The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'."
logari81: that was with XAA
logari81: with EXA works xv fine but the system is very laggy
logari81: for exapmle when 3 windows or more are opened
[TiZ]: Hi there. I'm having a little bit of a problem. After updating to kernel 2.24.21 in Ubuntu Hardy, and then updating to latest ATI drivers in tormod's repository and building current DRM modules... my X server's totally broken. I get the screen where the little X sits in the center and does nothing, and whiteness builds up from the bottom right corner of the screen.
[TiZ]: I may have gotten the version number wrong. It's the latest kernel released in hardy.
orkid: nd whiteness builds up from the bottom right corner of the screen.
orkid: whoa
orkid: thats sounds weird
[TiZ]: Yeah, I promptly hit the power button when it started doing that.
[TiZ]: I'll go back to the stock version for now, once I get home. I don't have my CD on me.
agd5f: logari81: the problem isn't the driver, it's XAA. XAA doesn't get along with composite
spstarr_work: airlied_: since you have agp now working, I will put in the r300 Radeon 9800 PRO AIW card and test also
spstarr_work: i will also test rebooting to see if it hangs on reboot or not
logari811: oops did I miss something?
spstarr_work:
spstarr_work:
logari811: In xorg.conf there I set only AccelMethod, I do not define any further parameters, is there any suggestion?
logari811: just in case it didnt come
agd5f: logari811: what xserver are you using?
chithead: logari811: I also hat performance issues with exa and rv410, they went away after upgrading to xserver 1.5.1
chithead: hda*
chithead: had*
airlied_: spstarr_work: let me know how the AGP goes.. I've no r300 AGP cards to test with, I just hacked up r200 support and crossed my fingers.
spstarr_work: ok, i will try on both the r300 and the rv350
[TiZ]: Hello, again.
[TiZ]: I'm currently running the Ubuntu Hardy Live CD, and I've chrooted into my installation. The problem I'm having is with some xorg driver packages in Tormod Volden's repository, and a DRM module from xorg-edgers. I got an update for my linux kernel and the OS ati driver at the same time. So I did those, and then rebuilt the DRM module as I understand I'm supposed to after each upgrade. But now my X is broken! I just get this black screen with
[TiZ]: a little X in the center, and whiteness building up from the bottom right corner of my screen.
[TiZ]: I guess the question I'm trying to ask is, where do I go from here? Should I just reinstall and rebuild the DRM modules? Should I roll back to the stock drivers? Would I be missing much if I did that?
chithead: [TiZ]: is it an lvds display?
[TiZ]: Um, a laptop panel
chithead: [TiZ]: looks like a modesetting problem then
[TiZ]: But why would there be modesetting problems now? It worked just fine before.
chithead: well you built new drivers
[TiZ]: I only built the DRM module myself. I got the drivers from a deb repository. I used this thread: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9951
adamk: [TiZ], I think the point is that it's possible this is a regression in the driver.
[TiZ]: Oh. I see.
adamk: Newer versions sometimes break things that worked before, especially if it's a development version of the driver (which may be the case here, we don't know).
adamk: If you can grab the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from your installation, it might give some clue as to the problem.
logari811: agd5f, chithead: xserver 1.5.2
chithead: [TiZ], adamk: as I observe this too for a long time now, I guess it is some issue in the driver that just did not trigger as frequently before
[TiZ]: Actually, I think I can.
chithead: to me it seems that somehow the contact to the display controller is lost
[TiZ]: http://pastebin.com/d2756eff7
adamk: Well, it doesn't look like X is crashing as far as I can tell.
adamk: [TiZ], Be patient and maybe one of the developers will pop in with an idea.
adamk: If now, you can try one of the mailing lists.
adamk: s/now/not/
[TiZ]: I'll wait around a bit.
[TiZ]: Thank you, guys. :)
agd5f: [TiZ]: does disabling the dri help? Option "DRI" "False"
[TiZ]: I haven't tried it.
[TiZ]: I gotta go take out the trash. When I get back, I could give it a shot.
[TiZ]: Sorry I took so long.
[TiZ]: I'll set Option DRI to false, try it out, and return here with my results.
spstarr_work: 30 mins to go
[TiZ]: Hello. DRI "false" did bring me to my login screen.
[TiZ]: So something's wrong with my DRM module. And I have an idea what.
[TiZ]: Headers. :|
spstarr_work: home time.. kms agp time
[TiZ]: Sure, the kernel got upgraded automatically. But headers, uh...
[TiZ]: I don't think so.
[TiZ]: So would it be safe to rebuild the DRM modules inside a chroot?
[TiZ]: After I install headers, of course
[TiZ]: Ugh... it's saying it can't find any packages for the latest linux kernel
[TiZ]: Oh wow. Looks like there's been lots of problems with -21.
[TiZ]: There aren't even headers for -21.
[TiZ]: Looks like I'm going back to -19.
[TiZ]: And since `uname -r` apparently returns -19, I'm assuming I'll be able to just build the kernel module for that version from insde my chroot.
[TiZ]: Alright, I'm going to restart and see if it works
[TiZ]: So that didn't work.
spstarr_desk: airlied_: trying on the laptop now....
[TiZ]: I am back into my own installation. But moving back to -19 and rebuilding the DRM modules didn't help. So I'm leaving DRI off while I figure it out.
[TiZ]: The DRM modules in question are from Oct 14, 08. Did anything happen that day?
[TiZ]: Or around that day?
spstarr_desk: airlied_: crashes
spstarr_desk: same as before with -13
spstarr_desk: with -27 ati DDX
airlied_: spstarr_desk: which kernel?
spstarr_desk: 2.6.27-13
spstarr_desk: newest one in koji
spstarr_desk: it also crashes when rebooting (IRQ issues again)
airlied_: spstarr_desk: did you used to have agpmode set in your xorg.conf?
spstarr_desk: I have that in the config
spstarr_desk: take it out?
airlied_: it doesn't matter now.
airlied_: there is a kernel command line
airlied_: radeon.agpmode=
airlied_: -1 sets PCI mode, 1,2,4,8 are the valid options.
airlied_: try booting with some different ones.
spstarr_desk: i can try 2x
spstarr_desk: so radeon.agpmode=-1,2?
airlied_: no..
airlied_: the -1 sets PCI mode
spstarr_desk: oh mode of '-1' ok i will try AGP 2x mode...
spstarr_desk: =2
[TiZ]: The newst drm module provided by the xorg-edgers deb-src repository is causing my x to give me a black screen
[TiZ]: If I set Option DRI "false" in my xorg.conf, I can boot (semi-)normally
spstarr_desk: agp 2x fails
spstarr_desk: trying well, agp 1x ;)
airlied_: spstarr_desk: can you get a dmesg?
airlied_: get a dmesg with no options.. and if -1 fails then I've got a different problem :)
spstarr_desk: with X started it will lock solid
spstarr_desk: serial console time?
spstarr_desk: or it wont get me enough to catch any kernel msg
airlied_: serial or netconsole shuold work.
spstarr_desk: ah yes netconsole
spstarr_desk: netconsole it is
airlied_: even a dmesg before X starts might be good.. pass drm.debug=1 on the command line as well
airlied_: try with -1 though, that should always work.
airlied_: if it doesn't I've got something else busted.
spstarr_desk: sure that will work fine.. I will try with -1 now first
spstarr_desk: -1 worked
spstarr_desk: ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 slub_debug=- printk.time=1 drm.debug=1 radeon.agpmode=-1 3
spstarr_desk: http://www.sh0n.net/spstarr/r300-kms.dump
[TiZ]: If I go back to the stock version of radeon that came with Hardy, what kind of stuff that has been added since then will I be missing out on?
airlied_: spstarr_desk: you used to have agpmode 4 in xorg.conf?
spstarr_desk: need a dmesg w/ AGP on?
spstarr_desk: i still do, but i didnt boot into X (init 3)
airlied_: does X work with agpmode=-1?
spstarr_desk: i will start X now with that...
airlied_: the X setting is ignored with kms
spstarr_desk: since its ini runlevel 3 right now will switch to 5
airlied_: I'm just wondering what is different.
airlied_: try radeon.agpmode=4 radeon.dynclks=0 maybe.
airlied_: spstarr_desk: if you set an agpmode you still get a console?
[TiZ]: I guess I'll wait.
spstarr_desk: lemme reset laptop i have composite on which crashed
spstarr_desk: sec i will start X w/o composite (its writing stuff to disk)
spstarr_desk: [ 417.990825] [drm:radeon_fence_poll] polling 925
spstarr_desk: [ 417.990832] [drm:radeon_fence_poll] polling 925
spstarr_desk: oh wait..
spstarr_desk: Composite *IS* off
spstarr_desk: no, X does not work with -1 airlied_
spstarr_desk: screen corruption and then it gets stuck in some X server loop with input
spstarr_desk: trying radeon.agpmode=4 radeon.dynclks=0 drm.debug=1 .. one moment *without X* started initially (runlevel 3) will provide dmesg...
airlied_: spstarr_desk: oh wierd..
airlied_: spstarr_desk: can you just run a bare X server..
spstarr_desk: yes i can go into a simple xterm
spstarr_desk: ok i am in X with a xterm
spstarr_desk: dmesg coming up
spstarr_desk: i will put my Xorg.conf also
airlied_: no need for xorg.conf we ignore it all mostly now, as long as you don't have XAA forced on or something.
spstarr_desk: no XAA
spstarr_desk: Option "GARTSize" "128" Option "RingSize" "16" Option "BufferSize" "2"
airlied_: we ignore al lthat.
spstarr_desk: are the only options i have for radeon
spstarr_desk: ah ok so i can kill it all now
airlied_: well for kms we ignorei t.
airlied_: not sure we do much with it without kms though :)
spstarr_desk: ption "DynamicClocks" "on"
spstarr_desk: dmesg is up
spstarr_desk: http://www.sh0n.net/spstarr/r300-kms.dump
spstarr_desk: gap
spstarr_desk: gah lemme get a full dmesg..
spstarr_desk: http://www.sh0n.net/spstarr/r300-kms.dump
spstarr_desk: the other is overflow of kernel text buffer with X started
spstarr_desk: the previous is the boot up in /var/log/dmesg
spstarr_desk: [ 0.000000] Unknown boot option `drm.debug=1': ignoring
spstarr_desk: [ 0.000000] Unknown boot option `radeon.dynclks=0': ignoring
spstarr_desk: [ 0.000000] Unknown boot option `radeon.agpmode=4': ignoring
spstarr_desk: huh
airlied_: they get passed to the module
spstarr_desk: ok so just noise
spstarr_desk: ok so the laptop is in X right now with xterm, what do you want me to do next?
airlied_: you got any gnome installed or just kde?
spstarr_desk: both
spstarr_desk: want me to load up GNOME?
airlied_: run metacity and then gnome-terminal
spstarr_desk: doing so..
spstarr_desk: worked
spstarr_desk: next?
airlied_: try a full gnome-session then
spstarr_desk: locked up on restart of X
spstarr_desk: solid lock
airlied_: hmm I must check recyclying works here.
spstarr_desk: let me do something else let me switch it from kdm to gdm only
spstarr_desk: so it matches your env
spstarr_desk: but that shouldnt matter
spstarr_desk: gonna restart with no options just with gdm and GNOME
spstarr_desk: then restart X by exiting the gnome session to see if it locks
spstarr_desk: worse
spstarr_desk: deadlock on startup with gdm and rhgb on grub line
spstarr_desk: airlied_: you even see the plymouth stuff when the mouse pops up
spstarr_desk: it then gdm loads, then lockup
spstarr_desk: :/
spstarr_desk: i will try with no dynamic clocks next.. then agpmode=-1
airlied_: spstarr_desk: cool.. just playing on my agp box to see if I can make it crash.
spstarr_desk: airlied_: dynamic clocks 0 and agpmode=-1 seems to work
spstarr_desk: airlied_: though massive corruption
spstarr_desk: trying dynamic clocks 0 and agpmode=4 now...
spstarr_desk: trying dynamic clocks 0 and agpmode=4 now... lock up
spstarr_desk: goes into nomodeset again :(
spstarr_desk: step by step
spstarr: hmm, -27 has some screen corruption but i did comment out Xorg options GARTSize etc
spstarr: is back to normal now ;/
terracon: hmm radeon agp modesetting ... interesting
terracon: downloading
spstarr: terracon: doesnt work for me at moment
spstarr: terracon: Fedora?
terracon: spstarr: yes Fedora
spstarr: which card?
terracon: r300 R350
spstarr: !
spstarr: KDE or GNOME?
terracon: sorry R350
spstarr: or you have both?
terracon: kde
spstarr: does composite work for you?!?
spstarr: or does it crash like me
terracon: hmm. I think I have enough bits to log into gnome
spstarr: do you have KDE 4.1?
spstarr: if so have you tried kwin composite?
spstarr: does it work? does it crash?
[TiZ]: If I go back to the stock version of radeon that came with Hardy, what kind of stuff that has been added since then will I be missing out on?
terracon: after I install agp radeon I will turn on kwin desktop effects
terracon: I shall try now
spstarr: terracon: dont use kms yet.. well you can try but
terracon: and it's KDE 4.1.2
spstarr: i wanted to see if it worked at all, given the badness seen if it does crash for you then we know GLX needs to be fixed
spstarr: thats fine
airlied_: terracon: try kms with AGP, the more test cases the better!
robokopp: would an pci express r430 card help you spstarr?
terracon: spstarr: lagging hard with desktop effects , no lockup though
airlied_: terracon: with kms?
terracon: airlied_: negative. It's installing right now
terracon: I'll reboot in a sec
[TiZ]: Hello?
terracon: I won't leave here though. This is running in a vnc session
spstarr: terracon: try that too
spstarr: try everything! :)
spstarr: airlied_: i am also curious if he can crash GLX with kwin on his card
terracon: I will
spstarr: airlied_: given what we saw it SHOULD crash no?
terracon: vnc is going slow.redrawing irc like a 300 baud bbs
spstarr: i can try kms AGP on the Radeon 9800 PRO card but i wanna eat grapes and cookies first (dinner)
[TiZ]: It's like I'm invisible. Maybe I need to restart and re-identify.
[TiZ]: Hello?
terracon: installed rebooting
[TiZ]: Hello??
agd5f: [TiZ]: we can see you
[TiZ]: Oh. Okay. I'm not asking for a lot of your guys' time. I would just like to ask one quick question.
[TiZ]: If I go back to the stock version of radeon that came with Hardy, what kind of stuff that has been added since then will I be missing out on?
robokopp: for example [TiZ] you could find out for yourself which version the hardy stock version of the driver is
[TiZ]: Ah. I'm sorry. It's probably from like, April.
[TiZ]: Um... 1.6.0.something, the package says
spstarr: terracon: im so glad I found a KDE user with an r3xx :))))
spstarr: you :P
spstarr: and Fedora
robokopp: spstarr i also use kde, have the testing system set up now
robokopp: i think r430 should be similar hm
spstarr: Fedora?
robokopp: no, gentoo
robokopp: but xorg git
spstarr: which DDX and kernel
robokopp: kernel 2.6.26
spstarr: git ati DDX?
robokopp: yes
spstarr: does kwin composite work for you?
spstarr: which mesa
robokopp: mesa git
robokopp: yes... it works for now
spstarr: and turning it off/on?
spstarr: or switching texture mode?
robokopp: ill test now
spstarr: in my case turning it even on will eventually lockup
robokopp: hm... works here :(
robokopp: some artifacts but no crash
spstarr: what is in your Xorg?
spstarr: no Xorg.conf for radeon driver? just defaults?
robokopp: wait, i have an xorg.conf
robokopp: ah there was EXA set
robokopp: but nothing else
robokopp: and Driver "radeon" of course
robokopp: ill try without xorg.conf
spstarr: EXA ok good.. same as me
robokopp: would that make a difference?
spstarr: EXA is default
robokopp: hm ok
spstarr: airlied_: r4xx and r3xx are different much?
spstarr: robokopp: doesnt that use the r300 dri driver?
robokopp: yes it does
RTFM_FTW: R3xx, R4xx and R5xx are all quite similar
spstarr: so then why is composite working for him ?
spstarr: if this is a unique problem for me i have to question why
robokopp: hm ok without xorg.conf keyboard and mouse arent working
spstarr: yeah
robokopp: thats why i set up an xorg.conf ^^
spstarr: i have one also, kinda need to still
robokopp: hm really strange
spstarr: robokopp: is there any debug you can show me?
spstarr: should take Xorg git?
spstarr: are you using any custom patches?
robokopp: im using the x11 overlay for gentoo
spstarr: are you using any custom patches with mesa? or just git master directly
spstarr: whats the overlay
robokopp: i think there are no patches
robokopp: its for gentoo to have git packages
spstarr: oh a builder thing
robokopp: but they compile form source so its pretty the same
spstarr: git snapshot of xorg?
robokopp: as building from git
robokopp: yes
spstarr: i can take Xorg git and build into an RPM
spstarr: just by commenting out patches
robokopp: well debug... i have nothing special, just the xorg log
spstarr: can you put that up somewhere?
robokopp: yes, of course
spstarr: nothing from drm in kernel log?
spstarr: terracon: you?
robokopp: hm lets have a look
spstarr: you're much closer in terms of GPU :)
robokopp: [drm] Loading R400 Microcode
robokopp: [drm] Num pipes: 4
robokopp: just that
robokopp: hm R400 microcode... perhaps thats the difference to the r300 bug
spstarr: terracon: since you're using Fedora, you would be the closest I can get to seeing if this not just some problem on my rv350 mobile
spstarr: terracon: please do AGP kms first for airlied, since thats the hot thing right now :)
spstarr: robokopp: im not sure
robokopp: spstarr hm it loads xaa when i comment out exa
spstarr: robokopp: if the same code paths are used as they will be in the GLX
spstarr: robokopp: switch it to exa thne
spstarr: XAA is dead
robokopp: but ok you have exa so doesnt matter anyway
robokopp: yes
spstarr: robokopp: there must be something in the DRI r300 code that allocates something differently than the r400 sections
robokopp: hm strange... i had it crash yesterday
spstarr: robokopp: what kind of crash
spstarr: how did you trip it
robokopp: xorg crash
robokopp: got back to kdm
spstarr: same
terracon: airlied_: plymouth graphical screen started up and the white bar at the bottom went far right and than sat there. X didn't start
robokopp: hm dont know really...
robokopp: ill try to reproduce
robokopp: http://rafb.net/p/A2eKUb52.html
robokopp: xorg log
spstarr: robokopp: thats what happens for me
spstarr: but more often
robokopp: ill play around a bit
terracon: xaa dead. exa replaces it, right?
spstarr: II) AIGLX: enabled GLX_texture_from_pixmap with driver support
terracon: let's turn on desktop effects for spstarr
spstarr: i do not have this
terracon: I guess the extreme lag is from software rendering everything
spstarr: some othe other GL extensions i might not have due to card
spstarr: but shouldn't i have this?
robokopp: hm, no idea
spstarr: GLX_texture_from_pixmap with driver support
terracon: desktop effects on
terracon: is still here
spstarr: terracon: KDE?
terracon: waves to spstarr
terracon: yes KDE 4.1.2
spstarr: terracon: go to system settings
spstarr: can you adjust the composite settings ?
spstarr: does it crash after this?
terracon: sec
spstarr: terracon: you do not set any GART sizes?
spstarr: comments all of those options out
terracon: spstarr: no GART size. I'm not using any xorg.conf
spstarr: none at all?
spstarr: moves his out of the way
terracon: oh and this is nomodeset boot
robokopp: spstarr: crash
spstarr: terracon: thats ok
spstarr: robokopp: what kind of crash?
spstarr: X restarted?
robokopp: yes
spstarr: consistant with me.. does it wedge when you use it though?
spstarr: terracon: same nomodeset
robokopp: ill post the backtrace
spstarr: terracon: can you adjust the composite settings.. does it crash for you also?
spstarr: robokopp: please do!
spstarr: terracon: my xorg.conf is now renamed
spstarr: restarting init 5...
terracon: I changed to trilinear and X crashed
spstarr: terracon: hehe
spstarr: but you can use composite normally otherwise?
robokopp: hm strange.. Xorg.log.0.old hasnt a backtrace
spstarr: going to init 3...
spstarr: brb
terracon: well I usually keep desktop effects off because it's doesn't play well if you have another 3d app fullscreen like a game
spstarr: ok
spstarr: im xorg.conf less now
robokopp: hm k how do i manage to start x from gdb
spstarr: here goes... enabling composite
spstarr: robokopp: got another pC?
spstarr: you attach to gdb after X is started
spstarr: so attach X when kdm/gdm is loaded
robokopp: ah right
robokopp: nice nice
spstarr: then 'cont' to let it resume running
robokopp: hm ok segfault right after logging in ^^
robokopp: oh no debug symbols ugh
spstarr: crash
spstarr: just killed all the kwin* files
spstarr: enabling....
robokopp: k
spstarr_desk: 32crash
spstarr_desk: it keeps restarting X
spstarr_desk: running gdb
spstarr_desk: something is really FUCKED
robokopp: here too
spstarr_desk: ok attached X
terracon: and I like to keep desktop effeects off because I don't trust it and it could cause a lockup and it upsets me to reboot all the time. I thought I left windows 95 stability long behind
terracon: ok desktop effects off
spstarr_desk: terracon: but does it work normally
spstarr_desk: ie, it doesnt crash on enable?
terracon: spstarr_desk: last time I tried it , It didn't crash on enable
terracon: fedora 9'ish timeframe
spstarr_desk: lemme get the new debuginfo for -27 ddx
robokopp: spstarr_desk http://rafb.net/p/Lhu06E89.html
robokopp: but its probably another bug
robokopp: i dont know why i seem to have no debug symbols
spstarr_desk: robokopp: missing debug/symbols
spstarr_desk: xorg server debug you need
spstarr_desk: swrast_copy_teximage2d <----
spstarr_desk: Software rendering?
spstarr_desk: is DRI on for you?
terracon: we need a way for the card to gently reset , rather than total lockup. I think I saw on irc glisse was working on that
spstarr_desk: glxinfo will tell you
robokopp: yes its probably still set as i switched
robokopp: in systemsettings
spstarr_desk: terracon: glisse is working on that
spstarr_desk: ya
robokopp: ah i know why... gentoo problem :p ill rebuild
terracon: spstarr_desk: good this rebooting is ridiculous
terracon: it's been a problem since r100
spstarr_desk: sec getting debuginfo rpm
terracon: I look kind stupid when I'm on teamspeak and the linux guy has to reboot all the time .. OOps I had a lockup
spstarr_desk: TV tuner works for me though on my 7500 Radeon :)
spstarr_desk: (watching your US debate in a window)
terracon: I have a hauppauge card
spstarr_desk: do those work in Fedora now?
terracon: well it's an older card and has always worked
terracon: maybe the newer ones with the fancy shmancy built in mpeg didn't work
spstarr_desk: ok attaching gdb
spstarr_desk: I wanna see why this is blowing up now
terracon: I think that't the 350 or maybe 250 hauppauge
spstarr_desk: #4 0x00818a5b in bufmgr_classic_post_submit (batch_buf=0xa3f5f28) at r300_mem.c:832
spstarr_desk: #5 0x0083bcc5 in dri_post_submit (batch_buf=0xa3f5f28, last_fence=0x0)
spstarr_desk: at radeon_dri_bufmgr.c:147
spstarr_desk: oh airlied_ now i can reproduce this with KDE and GNOME :)
spstarr_desk: #3 0x0043c68e in __assert_fail (assertion=0x8436d5 "!batch_bo->pending_count",
spstarr_desk: file=0x8436ca "r300_mem.c", line=825, function=0x843acc "bufmgr_classic_post_submit")
spstarr_desk: at assert.c:78
spstarr_desk: terracon: I am using rawhide (F10 beta now)
terracon: pokes airlied_
terracon: spstarr_desk: me too :)
airlied_: spstarr_desk: thats a different one, or did we get that one yesterday?
spstarr_desk: terracon: got a spare PC?
spstarr_desk: I got that yesterday with GNOME when trying desktop effects with GNOME
spstarr_desk: and turning off/on
spstarr_desk: terracon: if so, run gdb attach `pidof X` when kdm or gdm is loaded
terracon: spstarr_desk: negative. I took that rawhide plunge because I want to help with r300 debugging. I want F10 to be a good release becuase I thought F9 for radeon was painfully bad
spstarr_desk: then see if X will dump a stack if you have debug info
spstarr_desk: terracon: hmm so no spare pc, ok :)
robokopp: oh dri2 has changed
spstarr_desk: there's no dri2 for radeon yet
robokopp: yes, but i have to build some stuff again, as xorg-server doesnt compile :)
terracon: spstarr_desk: well I have an older laptop that needs a new hard drive
spstarr_desk: terracon: if it has a network you can ssh in and attach X with gdb
spstarr_desk: :)
spstarr_desk: even diskles or LiveCD
robokopp: spstarr_desk i have a spare pc and can test quite everything, just tell me
spstarr_desk: as long as you got network you can debug X remotely
terracon: I have an asterisk server and another serverr running centos . So If I need stability I can run vnc or remote X app
spstarr_desk: robokopp: you're using gentoo, so different X/mesa and DDX patches
spstarr_desk: Fedora has multiple patches for each
spstarr_desk: terracon: this bug looks to be memory manager related
robokopp: ah :(
spstarr_desk: i think we have a GEM now in 2.6.27
spstarr_desk: or in fedora's kernel builds(?)
spstarr_desk: syncs for a new mesa maybe new build out today
spstarr_desk: mesa-dri-drivers-7.2-0.8.fc10.i386
spstarr_desk: assuming latest
terracon: spstarr_desk: as soon as I get the laptop working again I can do ssh/X/gdb
spstarr_desk: you dont need a HD in it even terracon :)
spstarr_desk: if you have a live CD you can boot it
airlied_: so my r100/r200 cards all working in AGP mode
terracon: heh. The cdrom , she broke
airlied_: guesses its ebay time.
spstarr_desk: terracon: usb stick?
spstarr_desk: airlied :-)
spstarr_desk: airlied_: that crash above is that due to the bufmgr changes?
terracon: spstarr_desk: hmm , I don't think the bios has an option to boot from usb
spstarr_desk: airlied_: since i can now reproduce it constantly
spstarr_desk: terracon: what laptop
robokopp: spstarr_desk i had a look, the gentoo packages have no extra patches
terracon: it is a compaq, hold on I have to look at it
airlied_: spstarr_desk: yes bufmgr code..
spstarr_desk: airlied_: if you have kms on r1xx i can test on the R7500 AGP card
spstarr_desk: airlied_: ok so that one is known now?
airlied_: spstarr_desk: its not going to be on for F10 for r100/r200 so I don't really care about it.
spstarr_desk: ok
airlied_: I'm just testing the AGP side really.
terracon: Compaq 1700T
spstarr_desk: terracon: which cpu Pentium 3? or newer
spstarr_desk: if it should support uSB booting
terracon: spstarr_desk: I think it's a Pentium 3. A friend gave it to me, pIII 800 I believe
spstarr_desk: airlied_: how far is mesa behind git master?
spstarr_desk: terracon: well if you plug in a usb stick, doesn't hurt to try :)
terracon: true true
airlied_: spstarr_desk: the date is on the spec.
terracon: airlied_: do you want dmesg/xorg.log for my agp boot up
spstarr_desk: airlied_: looking at cvs
airlied_: terracon: boot with drm.debug=1 and pastebin kms startup..
terracon: Boston scored, noooooooo
terracon: spstarr_desk: are you watching Montreal vs Boston?
spstarr_desk: no us election debate even if its not my election (we just had ours)
spstarr_desk: r300-bufmgr.patch
spstarr_desk: ah
spstarr_desk: maybe i should disable it for now?
spstarr_desk: Mesa 2008 10 01
terracon: yeah we know how to get things done. US is going on .. and on .. and on
spstarr_desk: october 1st
spstarr_desk: :)
spstarr_desk: terracon: a minority gov't isn't getting things done ;) (and not the right colour either)
spstarr_desk: so from oct 1st to now let's see whats in mesa git
spstarr_desk: noting in git on r300
terracon: spstarr_desk: listen to this one. I was playing with Xubuntu live cd. So I thought I would run memtest on this compaq laptop . I walked away than came back and the machine was frozen. Than I restarted it and the machine doesn't even post now.
terracon: I blew it up!!!!!!!!!
spstarr_desk: terracon: unplug it remove battery put battery back..s ee if that works
spstarr_desk: i crashed my thinkpad once too it wouldn't post
spstarr_desk: 'stuck key' somehow didnt know which one but i fixed it
terracon: spstarr_desk: Ok , Well I did that a bunch of times and still no post
spstarr_desk: i even powered off 10 times and on still didnt post
spstarr_desk: terracon: err.... cant go into bios even?
terracon: nope
robokopp: hm spstarr_desk i think i cant reproduce your bug :( i only have the swrast thing, thats probably another one
spstarr_desk: terracon: hehe thats not good
spstarr_desk: terracon: bad ram?
spstarr_desk: robokopp: yep
robokopp: do you have another ones related to kde i could test?
terracon: spstarr_desk: I dunno. maybe. I switched the ram stick around. There are 2. I took 1 out, booted from one. Took that out than put the other in. No go. I don't know wtf happened.
terracon: Damn you memtest
spstarr_desk: terracon: i can't see how that would damage a laptop
spstarr_desk: it just tests stresses memory
spstarr_desk: terracon: it just sits at splash screen?
spstarr_desk: nothing else?
terracon: I know that's why I'm scratching my head as to wtf happened
terracon: No it doesn't even post. No , Compaq screen . No bios coming up
spstarr_desk: terracon: dead LCD ?
spstarr_desk: or you see a backlight
spstarr_desk: did it beep before if it posted?
terracon: Turn it on. Blackscreen
terracon: no beep
spstarr_desk: any connectors loose?
spstarr_desk: terracon: plug into VGA monitor?
terracon: spstarr_desk: I think I tried the vga thing but maybe I'll try that now for shiz and giggles
spstarr_desk: oh buffmgr is a big patch
spstarr_desk: terracon: did you provide airlied the debug he wanted?
terracon: spstarr_desk: not yet
spstarr_desk: airlied: i will log this crash for you in rh bz
spstarr_desk: since its a buffmgr bug which you're still tuning
terracon: terracon: boot with drm.debug=1 and pastebin kms startup
terracon: uhh what is pastebin kms
spstarr_desk: paste bin the dmesg
spstarr_desk: kms will be on by default so you dont need to turn it on
terracon: oh yeah the paster site
terracon: when I get back, pastebin the dmesg .. or
robokopp: does this work with .26 also?
spstarr_desk: airlied: bug logged for your convenience
spstarr: terracon: laptop still broken?
terracon: spstarr: yes
terracon: just playing with some stuff
spstarr: terracon: :(
terracon: clarify this for me. tack on "drm debug=1" onto grub boot options .. or do nomodeset 3 than rmmod radeon, drm, modprobe drm debug=1, modprobe radeon modeset=1
spstarr: well airlied want you to enable debug with kms so:
spstarr: on grub boot line:
spstarr: add drm.debug=1
terracon: is that a valid boot option?
spstarr: ya
spstarr: the kernel module will pick it up
terracon: sec
terracon: vahishes into thin air
spstarr: terracon: save your dmesg don't boot into X unless he wants you to
terracon: and I'm gack
terracon: back
terracon: sighs
spstarr: what happened?
terracon: damn you gb
terracon: I think I'm a lil dislexic I do that alot
terracon: dmesg coming up
terracon: airlied: http://pastebin.com/d191c56cc
terracon: spstarr: there's comp store on Yonge street that does alot of repairs called Techwave. I'm going to take it in there and get them to throw some different parts into it till it posts
spstarr: you're in Toronto?
terracon: I still think it's the hard drive preventing it from posting
terracon: and yes I'm Toronto
spstarr: im just in the north end of city
spstarr: the southern 905
terracon: compaq bios is really neutered
spstarr: thats not good
terracon: very proproproietary bios. Actually totally proprietary
terracon: 100% proprietaridness
terracon: spstarr: for that dmesg I changed inittab boot to 3.
terracon: and it said invalid boot option but the dmesg shot out alot of information so it did the job I suppose
spstarr: ignore that
spstarr: when airlied pops up give him url unless he saw it
airlied: yeah agp 8x nice.. I must be doing something wrong then.. bah, back to reading the code.
spstarr: wishes this laptop had 8x
terracon: oh and this laptop has an IBM Travelstar. Now If I remember right these drives failed .... alot
spstarr: you could take disk out if that failed
terracon: I have the drive out right now. no post, same black screen of death
spstarr: the motherboard fried?
terracon: maybe
terracon: I don't know what to think anymore
spstarr_home: crash with DDX
spstarr_home: im gonna run X in debug mode always now i want to find this one (if it not a total wedge) and log it
spstarr_home: ok
spstarr_home: now if the DDX is really crashing i hope to catch it
spstarr_home: i am using no xorg.conf
terracon: ohhhh, interesting
terracon: reading a post on how to "hard reset"
spstarr_home: hmm?
spstarr_home: for your laptop model?
terracon: yes
spstarr_home: known issue?
terracon: take out bat, pull out power than power on and hold down power button for 1 minute
terracon: well not a know issue but someone else having a problem on compaq boot
terracon: let's try this
spstarr_home: ...
terracon: hmm. the lil bios battery
spstarr_home: aha
spstarr_home: you fixed it?
terracon: nope it's still dead
spstarr: :(
terracon: spstarr: I cracked open the case
spstarr: hardcore!
spstarr: terracon: and?
terracon: currently . I yanked out the processor. Maybe it became unseated. Going to re-insert
spstarr: oh your cpu isn't welded in
spstarr: rawhide is syncing on laptop right now
terracon: nope. This laptop has been upgraded before. And I see the heat spreader on top of the cpu is missing the screws
spstarr: hehe
terracon: oh I found a nice page that listed how to take apart the chassis
terracon: likes ripping crap apart
terracon: it's the re-assembly that kicks your ass :)
terracon: and it has an ATI Mobility M1
spstarr: especially if its proprietary ;-)
spstarr: what year is that laptop?
spstarr: an R100 or R200?
spstarr: or pre AGP 128 Pro
EruditeHermit: airlied: how goes it?
terracon: I'm not sure how you lock in this cpu it's a micro-pga2 . You know desktop style mobo's have the lil cam you flip to lock in the cpu
terracon: maybe the cpu wasn't seated properly
spstarr: terracon: possible the machine will not post with no cpu or not seated for safety
terracon: doing some googling. about micro pga2
terracon: yeah could this be the reason for no post
terracon: hrmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
spstarr: hehe
terracon: ok I see it just slides back and forth
spstarr: This pentium M can remove cpu also but its not worth doing
airlied: EruditeHermit: not too bad..
airlied: thinks I have rs48x working now for kms.
orkid: congrats!
spstarr: airlied: sorry I don't have an r4xx ;(
spstarr: r100, r300, rv350, rv6xx
airlied: nobody has rs48x when you need them, I had to steal a laptop from one of the support team for an hour.
spstarr: heh
